Paynton is waking up from it's winter slumber and starting to buzz with activity.
The Paynton Volunteer Fire Department was called out for their first fire (that wasn't a false alarm) of the year May 4. It was a small grass fire that spread into brush piles and trees nearby. A couple of hours and eight volunteers later, the fire was doused and everyone could go back to the station to put the old beast of a truck to bed.
The suspected cause of the fire is a cigarette butt thrown into the ditch in these dry conditions. Many places are flooding right now, but this is not one of them. Please make sure you do not throw anything into the ditch. Someone's carelessness has cost the family who owns that farm a fire call out, which is not cheap. Because of the fire truck's age, it is not the fastest vehicle in the area, so please use caution and call 911 right away if you have a fire getting out of control.
On a more positive note, the annual spring show put on by the Paynton Farmers' Market ran this past Mother's Day weekend. Saturday, May 7, local entrepreneurs gathered in the gym for a small butlovely market. Art, baking, books,crafts, photography, teaand quilts were the main show, along with local farm fresh eggs and honey, jams and jellies.
The library ladies put on a great lunch to raise money for the public library.
Paynton volunteers along with the farmers' market were selling home made frozen pizzas to raise money for a village beautification project. The plans for the project can be seen at The Coffee Cup in the old credit union building or at the up coming farmers' market in the arena starting June 7. The plans were drawn up by a professional landscaper and construction will begin this summer.
The group is accepting donations of any kind - cash, materials, labour or purchase a pizza to support the cause. Order forms are available at the above mentioned locations. You can also volunteer your time to making the pizzas. Just stop by the library and Sonja will gladly sign you up.
