Squeezing the last bit of fun out of the summer at the Unity swimming pool.

The last part of August has residents busy with garden processing, harvest preparation or lingering in the last few weeks of summer. School staff returned to school Aug. 26 and students will join them in the hallways Sept. 3. This means another whole new class of adorable kindergarteners, another class of Grade 7s migrating to the high school and another class beginning their last year of schooling, their senior year. Where did that time go?

Unity is still actively pursuing votes for the Richardson Pioneer sponsored Rider Nation Community Celebration Contest. You can vote every 12 hours from your mobile device, laptop, desktop and tablet or work computer (if allowed) at www.101greycupfestival.ca. Besides the social media route, there are posters all around this end of the province in store windows and community members will keep doing what they can to spread the word to vote for Unity for their chance to win between $25,000 and $50,000 towards their new swimming pool as well as a big hometown Grey Cup party.

It will take everyone's help to achieve this goal so keep those fingers clicking for votes for Unity. If you are heading to the Labour Day classic, why not contact myself or Carey Baker about taking some flyers to pass out to remind folks of Unity's enthusiasm and efforts towards winning the vote for this competition.

Farmers market is a busy Thursday venue. Come early because, as soon as the doors open at 4 p.m., the rush is on. Fresh garden produce, baking, farm-fresh eggs and much, more more. Come to the Adanac Hall at the museum and get some homemade, fresh, organic treats for your table.

The farewell season for the swimming pool is now over. This was the last year for the existing pool as construction is in very early stages for the new pool that is still being fundraised for. With the temperature hovering over 30 degrees, everyone took advantage of a cool dip in the pool for the last time Aug. 25.

Unity Minor Football has hit the field. Once again there will be flag football for Grades 2-3 and 4-6. The club will host a 6 A Side Tackle for Grades 6-8 who will participate in the NorthWest Minor Football League, which will include six teams - doubling the three teams last year. Registration took place for the tackle division this week and registration for flag football will be Sept. 2 at 4 p.m. at the UCHS junior gym. Organizers are very excited about the growth of the program as many new youth football programs are sprouting up across Saskatchewan.

Unity Minor Football day will be Sept. 21. The day gives players a chance to celebrate the game of football, with flag and tackle games going all day long. The tackle teams will play some teams not in their league so it's a great opportunity to showcase their skills while playing a game they love. It's a great event for parents, siblings, grandparents and friends to come out and enjoy as it includes a food booth and some great prizes in addition to live football action

3-on-3 hockey is back. Download your registration form from unityminorhockey.com or pick up at the town office. Minor hockey registration is Sept. 5; 3-on-3 registrations will also be accepted.

Coffee row conversation included remembering Princess Diana as Aug. 31 is the 16th anniversary of her tragic death in a horrific car accident while trying to evade the paparazzi. And, with a now 7-1 record, there still are excited reviews of the Rider season. Fans know this year's team is hungry for a Grey Cup berth as host.

So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week.
