Grass everywhere is growing very quickly. It is good to see it is so lush and green. I notice the grass has been cut in the village already. That will be an ongoing job from now on.
A small crew gathered at the Waseca Community Centre May 24 to do interior cleaning and outside work. The volunteers made good headway, but it will take another day to finish the work. It is hoped that more volunteers will help out when the next date is set. Watch for a poster in the post office.
May 24, the family of Vivien Metherell honoured her with an afternoon tea followed by a family supper. Guests from far and near came to wish Vivien a happy 90th birthday. During the afternoon, besides lots of visiting and reminiscing, two of Vivien's great-grandchildren entertained with piano solos.
Vivien's sister, Gladys Clark reminisced speaking of their childhood together with their parents on the farm in the Battlevale district. Life then, in the family, was much closer with everyone sharing in activities in the community. Whist drives and dances were held often in the local schoolhouse with ladies providing the lunch. Play at home and school was much more imaginative. Making play houses in the trees, mud pies and other things kept everyone enjoying themselves in spare time. Then there was riding horseback to school carrying lunch for themselves and oats for the horse. She also spoke of other interesting things that took place during their young lives.
During the afternoon Happy Birthday was sung by all present and the beautiful birthday cake that centered the head table was cut and passed around. We wish Vivien a future of good health and happiness.
