A coal furnace needing proper maintenance was the cause of a fire at a business in the RM of Paynton in December.

Paynton and Maidstone volunteer fire departments have been kept busy this winter. Between highway incidents and structural fires there has been a mess of calls to keep the volunteers hopping day and night.

Many of the highway incidents could have been avoided had the motorists been driving slower for the road conditions. Keeping a roadside emergency blanket and kit in your vehicle could potentially save you from freezing while waiting for help in these events.

Recently Paynton has had two structure fires, one in town at a home and the other in the RM at a business. Each of these fires could have been avoided with some planning and maintenance. The first was caused by a portableheater located too close to a combustible table leg, the other resulted from a coal burning furnace needing better attention. Please take care this holiday season and all year for that matter. Be aware of the fire hazards in your home and business to avoid a hefty bill, loss of lives and loss ofirreplaceable items.

To honour the volunteers in our area, Paynton Volunteer Fire Department is hosting a volunteer appreciation night at the Paynton Gym New Year's Eve. It should be a fun night open to all who have or would like to start volunteering time in and around Paynton. Come find out who the"volunteer of the year" is, it could be you.For more information or to RSVP call 903-7122.
