The Borden and & district volunteer fire department held a hotdog fundraiser Oct. 17 in the Borden Fire Hall. For $3 you got a hotdog, chips, pop or coffee and sweets, and an extra hotdog for $1. There were quite a number out to enjoy the lunch and help the firefighters raise funds for equipment and training.
There were a number of door prizes donated by businesses and individuals and these went to Eileen Petrun, Brooke Faith, Darlene Walker, Wendell Dyck, Stan Foster, Gerry Wainwright, Jason Rempel, Evelyn Kasahoff, Carol Waffle, Deb Hembery, Vern Sylvester, Laura Loeppky, Gerry Penner, Reuben Derksen, Karen Buckingham, Jim Olinyk, Denise Nichol, Sandy Long, Phil Hogg and Gladys Wensely.
The GG Garden Grill opened for business in Borden Oct. 18, with Grace and Friday Mbuekor and their family leasing the former Borden Art and Eatery. The cafe will be run mainly by Grace and her daughter Barinadum with family helping out for the opening. The Mbuekor family moved from Nigeria as refugees during troubled times there 17 years ago, coming to Saskatoon.
Mama G serves Canadian food mainly, with some Nigerian specials. The café will be open Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with a brunch special for October, closed on Mondays and open Tuesday to Saturday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Quite a number of people dropped in on Oct. 18 for lunch, coffee or supper and to welcome the family to Borden. The cafe had been closed since the end of June, 2013 so it is great to see it open again.
Condolences are extended to Dale and Diane Kieper and family of Radisson on the accidental death of a niece, Danille Brooke Kerpan, who was killed in a car accident Oct. 10 at the age of 25 years. Her service was held in Kenaston Oct. 17.
Also sympathy to Ken and Linda Tanchak and family of Borden on the death of Ken's mother Anne Tanchak of Hafford, who passed away Oct. 16 at the age of 96. Her service was held in Hafford Oct. 20.
