The junior girls' volleyball team from Neilburg Composite School hosted an eight-team tournament the weekend of Sept. 29. Neilburg entered two teams into the tournament. Both played very well and improved their game skills. Neilburg 2 came in third in their pool and advanced to the semifinals where they were defeated in three close games against Lashburn. Neilburg 1 went through the round robin undefeated and won their home tournament defeating Unity in a well battled three-game final.

The teams would like to thank the senior girls for running the booth and scorekeeping for the tournament. Jarett Biondo, Mr. Walso, Shannon Putnam and Marissa Brockhoff were the referees and umpires, working for the whole day. The parents kindly worked the booth and provided delicious food for all the players attending.

The boys' and girls' junior B volleyball teams went to Mini-Mega in Maidstone Oct. 2. Both teams played very well and won the gold medal.

Congratulations to all the cross-country runners who went to the meets in Wilkie and Biggar. All the runners did very well. Kale Moth won a gold medal at both meets! Sport Chek has recently sponsored Kale with shoes and running outfits.

NCS began collecting pennies for UNICEF in the spring. To date, the school has collected $108.64. The goal is to raise enough to purchase a "School-in-a-box," which is approximately $235. During October you can drop off your pennies at the office if you wish to help this worthy cause. They will take nickels, dimes and quarters too. Every cent counts.

Thanks to Cindy from the Grab 'n Go who has donated numerous gallons of ice cream to the school. The students really appreciate her generosity!

The new yearbook (2011-12) is now here. There are lots of photos of student activities from kindergarten through to Grade 12. Mrs. Worman put in a lot of hard work on this project. It is a great keepsake of the last school year. You can pick one up for $25 at the school office.

The Terry Fox Run was held Sept. 28. Since there are a few pledge forms still outstanding, the final tally has not been determined. However, the total will be over $1,500.

Mrs. Kerr-Goodfellow reports magazine sales are on until Oct. 16. It is possible to order online at www.qsp.ca. This is the biggest fundraiser of the year and support is appreciated.

Students paid $2 to wear head gear Hat Day, Oct. 5. The money goes to SRC initiatives. Over the past year the SRC bought new jerseys for three teams at a cost of $1,200. Several years ago they bought an automated screen for the gym which is used for grads, movies and lessons. The cost was $1,600. They sponsor a foster child each year for $450. They send 26 Christmas boxes to Operation Christmas Child, $600. The SRC sponsored a pancake breakfast during Welcome Week and they also host a Christmas dinner for the whole school - also inviting the local senior citizens to join them - in December. They send students to a leadership conference each year.

These are just some of the plans for the upcoming year. Everyone in Grades 7 through 12 is invited to work with the SRC to fulfill our dreams of a great school. If you would like to join the SRC or have ideas, talk to an SRC member or Mrs. Kerr-Goodfellow.

Neilburg Composite School is looking for some parents to volunteer to provide the students with a hot lunch once per week. Some of last year's volunteers have other commitments and are unable to do this again. The students and staff always look forward to Hot Lunch Day and would really miss this each week. As well, the funds from the hot lunches go towards school field trips. Traditionally hot lunches have been served on Tuesdays but if we had a group of parents that could do it on another day of the week, please let the office know.
