It was busy weekend for residents of the village. Saturday was the annual clean-up day, when residents worked to get rid of debris, scrap materials and junked appliances.
The heritage church, Christ Church, received its annual spring cleaning as well.
A noon barbecue, sponsored by the village and the Waseca Volunteer Fire Department, was enjoyed. It was a beautiful sunny day for this outdoor event.
Saturday, the 100th anniversary committee sponsored a 10-mile walkathon. Our thanks to the 17 people who took the time to walk and help to raise money for the anniversary celebration. One hundredth anniversary t-shirts were presented to: Tracy Key for being best fundraiser; Victoria Hult and Jenna MacFadyen as youngest walkers; and Bruce James as the oldest walker.
A barbecue lunch was enjoyed at the community centre following the walk.
Every once in awhile we enjoy hearing about Bruce McFadyen's birdhouses. He has now built more than 9,666. Many of the birdhouses are donated to charitable causes where they are auctioned. Over $100,000 has been raised in this manner since Bruce first began to build birdhouses a few years ago.
Bruce is always willing to donate a few birdhouses to anyone who wishes to put them up. Many of the houses, especially in more remote places, are occupied every spring by bluebirds. His houses can be seen in nearly every province in Canada.
Bruce constructs the birdhouses from materials that are normally thrown away but have been retrieved and turned into homes for the birds. Just keep up the good work, Bruce.
The Waseca Quilter's Guild had a couple of busy days last week. They met on both Tuesday and Wednesday at the community centre to make the top for a charity quilt. It is now quilted with a small amount of hand sewing to complete it. It will be on display at the Mother's Day brunch to be held at Waseca Hall May 8.
Sandra Sutherland accompanied her son Jamie and his wife Michelle on a tour of the Las Vegas, Nev. area during the Easter break. They did lots of walking while sightseeing.
From the Waseca Herald, Aug. 1, 1907 - H. Hedger and W. Goodridge are both preparing to build residences, which they hope to have finished this fall.
Messrs. Dell and Anderson, local contractors are completing the frame residence of F.J. Tallant and will soon commence work on J. A. Morrison's two-storey house.
W. Goodridge has moved into his new building, where he will have the new post office and attend to his lumber and other business. He expects a car of bricks in a few days.
