Judy Newstead of Medstead was the lucky winner of their first Christmas tree decorating contest and won a $50 gift certificate from the Curiosity Shop'\ in Glaslyn.

News has come of the passing of John Heyden of North Battleford on Jan. 2 in Spiritwood. John is well known around the Battlefords from his involvement at the museum, where he ran the threshing machine every fall, and his square dancing years. He farmed west of Belbutte for many years retiring to their home on the acreage, just north of the city many years ago. He was 87. His wife is Alva (Gatzke of Belbutte), now of the city. John's funeral will be held from the Medstead Community Hall on Saturday, Jan. 11.

Word from down under is that the temperature is hanging right around 35 to 43 C. Joyce and Michael golfed a couple days and never got sunburned, so must have used lots of sunscreen. When they came to the water fountains they would spray themselves to cool off. It is disappointing though to not have any flowers to speak of. It's just too hot for them to survive. When its 4:30 a.m. here it is 9:30 a.m. there the next day. Joyce did enjoy the great fireworks that are an annual event there on New Year's Eve.

The snow just keeps a-coming down, but it could be worse. And, when its as cold as it is, we know it will improve, and we will appreciate that. A day or two of reprieve is nice when we get a break.

Minus 30 C Sunday kept many folks indoors that would ordinarily have been out.

Failure to find the word Christmas in some business advertising over the holiday caused me some concern, as there wouldn't be a holiday to celebrate without there being Christmas.

The high score at Canasta Jan. 3 went to Linda Ard and her partner Paulette Neale, with over 60,000 points. With four tables in play and some having a ball, it was a very pleasant evening, though it had been turning colder all day, from -5 to -20 C or so.

Sask Power has available, at no cost, at the CAA office in the city, timers for your vehicle plugins. They are pre-set to heat from 3:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m., which will save about $25 a winter. You don't even have to give your name or be a member or anything, just do your part to conserve energy and expense. They can be adjusted for different times to come on and go off, as you require.

This past Monday was declared by some folks down east, to be "Blue Monday" as the weather was so bad, the kids didn't go back to school, they couldn't get to work, there are still three months of winter left , etc. etc. Who wouldn't feel blue. However it seems Blue Monday is supposed to be the third Monday in January.

My daughter Donna Lambert in Leduc, Alta. bought a pretty "tool" in a second hand shop. She didn't know what it was but couldn't resist buying it. It has turned out to be a 'Pizzelle' cooker. This is a crispy thin patterned cookie, of Italian or Scandinavian countries. On the computer she found lots of interesting recipes and is looking forward to trying it out, on her gas range.

In Winnipeg, Man. with the freezing cold weather, a water main broke, causing a large flooded area. In the morning they found 33 vehicles were frozen in, and remedies were various. No one was rushing off to work by just dusting the snow off that morning.

High scorers at Contract Bridge Monday evening were Robert Iverson and second was Warren Iverson.

The Meota Chorus entertained at Davidson Manor Monday afternoon to a receptive audience of seniors. Since it was Ukrainian Christmas they sang Christmas songs. Everyone enjoyed them and their singing numbers and antics. I went along with the gang and enjoyed the nice lunch they served afterward. It was a nice surprise to meet up with friends from "the north," as I refer to the Spiritwood-Chitek Lake area. Doris and Terry Wasko lived in the Iffley district after they got married, and now reside in Davidson Manor. I had an interesting trip down memory lane with Linda Gatzke, a former Belbutte, then Medstead resident, who knew many from those areas that I did. Her sister Emma Marsh, who lived in the Sandwith district, is in the Evergreen Lodge in Leoville. They miss one another very much after being close all through the years.

Reports of robins being seen over the holidays is interesting. Sure hope they have a warm place to be hiding these days and where they can get to a suet block for feed. There won't be any worms out there!
