Harvest is officially in full swing. The frost scare last week was a little early and let's hope this year's harvest can get in the bin with minimal interruptions and weather distractions.

The circus passed through Unity this week and among the exciting entertainment was Zaira the contortionist.

Big congratulations to Unity's, soon-to-be Grade 7 student, Madison Gilbert who captured the junior talent title at this year's Saskatoon Exhibition talent competition. Madison's long-time involvement in the Unity School of Dance and the Unity Music Festival, combined with her love of music and dance as well as her shining stage presence, helped her to capture this title.

The circus came to town last week! Brought in as a fundraiser for the Unity Facilities Committee, it was well received by all generations. Family Fun Circus had performed in several communities around our area, arriving here Aug. 17. It was a wonderful one-ring show that interacted with audience members and certainly had something for every generation to enjoy. And, as an added bonus, kids got to see a donkzee (a cross between a zebra and a donkey) as well as kangaroos.

The last few days of the pool are underway with the aquatic centre set to close for the season Sunday, Aug. 26.

Unity baseball player, Blake Robertson, is in Vaughn, Ont. this week competing for a national bantam AAA baseball title with his team, the Lloydminster Twins. Blake celebrated much success this year as he was also a member of the gold medal winning baseball team at this year's Saskatchewan Summer Games. He was also part of the Lloyd team's provincial title win and as well will be heading with Team Saskatchewan to Winnipeg the long weekend in September to be part of the under 15 prospect series.

The Bantam Girls' Softball Zone 7 team, coached by Unity's Brent Weber, is off to Moosomin this weekend to compete in the annual Fall Ball Zone Provincial Championships. Last year Unity hosted the inaugural event and captured silver, as well as winning the Event of the Year award from Softball Sask. Several Unity bantam players made the Zone 7 team, as well as being on their own provincial championship team and the bronze medal winning Summer Games softball team.

This year was unprecedented for success and action for Unity Minor Ball teams and the newly formed junior team, the UK Royals. It will be hard to see the ball action come to an end after a very busy season at the diamonds.

Remember the Unity Golf Club is hosting lunch-time specials Tuesdays and Thursdays. Wednesdays feature barbecued beef or pork on a bun for only $4. Also coming up for the golf course is the annual Fun Day of Golf, Sept. 8. This year's event is again a fundraiser for the UFC who are working hard towards their fundraising goal for the new swimming pool and ground floor hall. Why not enter a team or call a UFC committee member to volunteer?

Coffee row folks are at a loss to describe this year's Rider season, although these folks can still be heard adding in their theories as to what isn't working and what could be working better for the football club. And the weather can never be sidelined as a topic; it gives us such a variety of conditions each week that it is sure to spark debate on whether we have or have not seen another year like this. Harvest and back-to-school activity will soon take over the conversation table as well ... So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week ...
