Tomorrow is the official first day of summer and how will you be celebrating it? Hopefully by gleefully acknowledging that timely rains are back helping our environment in its growing stages.
June has been a flurry of activity in Unity that kicked off with a busy Western Days weekend in the first weekend of June and has been followed up with multiple events hosted at the diamonds. How about that busy ball diamonds venue last weekend that saw more than 1,000 people come to watch 38 teams compete at GPLS championship weekend.
Our schools are in wind down phase with much of their field trip activity completed and they are now into exams and yearend celebrations.
St. Peter鈥檚 will hold their celebrations events next week with Kindergarten grad June 24 and Grade 6 grad on June 26. Yearend mass and awards celebrations will also take place on June 26. All that will be left after this is picking up report cards and the beginning of summer vacation for all. St. Peter鈥檚 staff and students are thankful for all the parent support this year in their many events and activities as well as helping their students keep on the learning track. As well, St. Peter鈥檚 students and staff are grateful for the support of Father Greg, the parish and the Knights of Columbus who also help support them both financially and in their faith journey. St. Peter鈥檚 parents and students are very thankful for their teachers and support staff that makes every effort to give each student a positive experience at school all year.
At UCHS, it is exam time so there are no more assemblies or classes, only studious work as students prepare and write their finals for this school year. UCHS staff and students are grateful for the many aspects that contribute to their success story that include the support of parents and the community, as well as gifts shared by fellow students in extra curricular programming. Students often share their thankfulness for their teachers who choose to offer so many additional things for students to engage in such as robotics, SLC, SADD, book clubs, sports and so much more. The feeling is a little melancholy in the halls as everyone knows they will miss the current Grade 12 class once they have taken the next step in the life鈥檚 journey outside the school halls. UCHS will be sadly bidding farewell to Mr. Wood who is heading to Ontario for a new adventure. You can join UCHS in wishing these graduates well at their cap and gown ceremonies June 28 at 10 a.m.
Unity Public School is also feeling a little melancholy as they are sending a great class of Grade 6 students across the road to the high school in the fall. However, they are happily welcoming a brand new kindergarten class into UPS hallways come the fall. UPS is also grateful for the support of parents, their SCC and community members 鈥 all of who have contributed into their success story this year. June 24 is the Grade 6 yearend celebration as well as the last official day of classes before report cards come out. UPS is also bidding farewell to Mrs. Soloski who is retiring at the end of this year.
Take advantage of the Unity Aquatic Centre during these summer months. You can enjoy aquacizes, public swimming and the occasional special event during the summer months at your local pool. Check the schedule either posted at the pool or on the town of unity website.
The ball diamonds only have two more Fridays left of slo-pitch action. But, fear not, there will be plenty of ball games to take in at the diamonds with both the Senior and Midget Cardinals continuing their league games in the NSRBL. As well, minor ball teams in both baseball and softball will continue to practice and play games in preparation for their upcoming provincial action.
Canada Day activities at our local museum will include a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m., church service at 10:30 a.m., barbecue lunch and concession from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., museum buildings open, live music by Will Ballantyne from 1 to 2 and 3 to 4 p.m., opening ceremonies and flag raising at noon, bouncy castle and kids games at 2 p.m., cake serving and biodegradable balloon release at 4 p.m., roast beef supper by advance ticket only (call Jim Sego at 306-228-3981, and fireworks after dark on the northwest corner of town.
Show the museum you love them by bringing your friends and visitors here. Or consider joining the museum committee, or consider volunteering with them in any increments you re able to offer. Better yet, come out and support their annual Canada Day festivities they are currently planning and organizing (always need extra volunteers here then too).
The things that are often taken for granted in our community are the very things visitors and out of towners are raving about in our community. Last column I reviewed all of the things 鈥渢o do鈥 in our town and this week I want to remind you about the 鈥淪hopportUNITY in Unity鈥. Remember your local businesses support our events, activities and community in general all year with the donations and sponsorships as well as their staff volunteering at a number of places and spaces in town. Keep them in mind this summer when it comes to your purchasing power. We often get raves from neighbouring communities about all the options here, so take a shopping trip right in your own community. No parking fees, and great hometown service.
Coffee row participant鈥檚 conversations have multiple topics on their 鈥渢o talk about鈥 lists, which sadly continue to revolve around lack of rain. Conversations include upcoming summer vacations or visitors expected. Folks are also talking about local sports teams and players, weather predictions, and what鈥檚 on tap for Unity the rest of June for things taking place. So you see we keep busy here in Unity with wisdom, laughter and plenty of fun here in Unity with our friends on coffee row.
