Will April showers bring May flowers or are we getting some more winter now or to come?
Tonight many people were able to enjoy the Volunteer Appreciation Night hosted by the local health region to show appreciation to the numerous volunteers who help make all the programs in town work as well as help those who benefit from assistance and visits in their day to day living. Â
Those who purchased tickets to the Unity Credit Union Laugh and Learn tomorrow night will enjoy some food along with some learning components presented by Unity Credit Union team as well as the great laugh inducing entertainment of Kelly Taylor, comedian. Â
We will all be taking a solemn moment this Saturday to remember where we were a year ago today and to pause to remember those 16 souls who lost their lives in the tragic Humboldt bus crash, as well as remember and pray for those survivors, and all of the families of victims and survivors, still trying to put their lives back together. The community of Humboldt will be holding a memorial service on Saturday at the Elgar Petersen arena at 4:30 p.m., which is set to be streamed. Please take this moment to thank the emergency services personnel in your community as it is events like these that we are extremely fortunate to have their dedication, training as well as heart and soul knowing they always have our backs. Also say a silent or aloud thank you to Saskatchewan health care and Stars professionals as incidences like these assure us we will always be in the best of hands. Thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the player’s families, the survivors, and all those who worked during and following the tragedy to help in the manner they were trained in to provide the heartfelt compassion and care needed for all those involved. Â
At UCHS, while the Hoopla excitement carried over past the event, UCHS is also now excited about their badminton season and robotics, especially after two of the robotics members won the regional science fair and will advance to the national science fair with their project in May. Their project, which by the way, happens to be a robot built from the ground up. Student led conferences and career fair will take place in April.  ACTIVATE day is April 11. Leadership class travels to Saskatoon for team building April 15. UCHS drama travels to Swift Current for Regional Drama Festival April 26 weekend after a very successful showing at public performances. Â
UPS Unity Public School Community Council Annual General Meeting will be Tuesday, April 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Unity Public School gym. Everyone is welcome. Member positions are available. Nomination forms are available at UPS main office and at the meeting. Nominations can be returned to school office by Tuesday, April 16. Nominations will be accepted from the floor.
At St. Peter’s School, Lent and music festival are primary focuses at present. The Spring Fling dance upcoming in April and will include a ton of fun with family games, door prizes, raffle table, snacks and drinks and will present a fun, family event for students, staff and their families.Â
Our schools will make the most of the last three months of this school year, even with a week-long Easter break thrown in there. Spring sports season has arrived for students. Grade 12s are finalizing so many things they need to complete their Grade 12 year, progress with their post-secondary plans as well as prepare for their graduation ceremonies. Grade 6 classes at both elementary schools will also be enjoying their last quarter of elementary school before they migrate to the high school in the fall.
Speaking of our schools, please take extra caution in our school zones and around town now that bikes have made their way backs to our streets. Take a proactive approach to traffic navigation. This will also apply to highway travel as spring farm equipment movement will be happening as well as spring roadwork.
Wilkie sends a big thank you to Unity residents for helping with their Hockeyville bid. Unity Minor Soccer registration was April 1. The season May through June Monday and Wednesdays with practices times TBA. Divisions being offered are: Under 5 2015-2014 Under 7 2013-2012 Under 9 2011-2010 Under 11 2009-2008 Under 13 2007-2006 Under 15 2005-2004 Under 17 2003-2002.
Music festival will run next week in piano, musical instrument, school entries, voice and musical theatre categories around Unity the week of April 8 to 12, with the showcase being held at UCHS senior gym on April 14 highlighting top performances as well as handing out awards. One of Saskatchewan’s longest running music festivals, you won’t want to miss this week long talent show. Vocal and musical theatre/speech take place all week at Unity United Church with times starting at 9 a.m, 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Piano runs Monday to Thursday at the Unity Baptist Church. Band takes place at St. Peter’s on Tuesday, April 9 at 1:30 p.m. Violin takes place at Unity Baptist Church at 3 p.m. on Thursday. The schools will showcase performances on Tuesday, April 9 at 9:15 a.m. at St. Peter’s while UPS will host Wednesday, April 10 at 9:15 as well.Â
Lenten lunch series is now over but you can still take in Lenten services at any of the community churches. Good Friday, Way of the Cross Walk will take place in its 17th year on April 19th starting and ending at Unity United Church. A great interactive service for all ages put on by the Ministerial Association, it finishes with hot cross buns and hot drinks and fellowship after the service. Of course, all churches will also hold celebratory Easter Sunday services as well. Please check with your denomination of your choice for exact service times.
This weekend, Delta Co-op hosts their 15th annual Easter Egg hunt at the arena, free to attend for kids to 10 years of age. Great fun for the whole family with plenty of treats and prizes to be won as well as a free barbecue for participants put on and sponsored by Compass Minerals staff committee. Â
Next weekend will be a busy one in Unity with multiple events taking place. April 12 to 14 is the JDS RV and Power Sport Indoor RV and ATV Show. This RV show starts Friday at noon and runs to 9 p.m., starts Saturday at 9 a.m. and runs to 6 p.m. and opens Sunday at 10 a.m. and runs to 4 p.m. giving plenty of opportunity to come check out these units in the comfort of an indoor environment.Â
Saturday, April 13, is the Spring Trade Show with plenty of unique shopping opportunities. Event opens at 9 a.m. and runs to 5 p.m. with a food booth on sight and a $2 admission with proceeds to the Grade 6 year-end trip for UPS.Â
Sunday, April 14, is the showcase of stars representing some highlights of the Unity Music Festival held all this past week. Â

Even though curling season in Unity is wrapped up, curling fans are keeping track of familiar face and seven-time Team Sask winner Brad Heidt as he competes this week at Nutana Curling Club in the Master’s Men’s curling championship.Â
Ball season folks are itching to get outdoors from their indoor practices and workouts in the rink. While some players have experienced winter training all winter long, others are ready and raring to go with this year’s ball season. Â
Revolution Dance has been part of several competitions as well as holding their own showcase on March 24 of solos, duets and musical theatre numbers. The Flat Out dance challenge is being hosted in Unity April 29 and 30 and soon thereafter will be the year end showcase of stars at the annual recital. Coffee row folks are excited because the line-up of events continues into April. Even after a full slate of events and activities held in February and March, the community continues to play host to a number of things for people to take part in. Weather predictions, Blue Jays and Rider predictions and overall review of all that’s great in our community continue to keep the topic tables busy.
