Unity determined to try again next time

Wow, hasn't this weather been fantastic? Enjoy while you can, folks, because various predictions and forecasts say winter wants to come back early again. It was the moment of truth for Unity.

A beautiful fall day combined with the gorgeous landscape of the Unity Golf Course was the setting for the fifth annual Canadace Heitt memorial marathon. More than 120 participants and dozens of volunteers came out to support this event to honor the memory of Candace Heitt.

It was the moment of truth for Unity. Residents sat on the edge of their seats at half time, Sept. 14, waiting to see if their votes were enough to put Unity in the top spot of the Richardson Pioneer Community Celebration Contest. Once again, the collective sigh of defeat was heard.

It is a disappointing loss. We just can't seem to crack the code for those online contests. However, as a community who bands together, we will make it our quest to try, try again.

Congratulations to those winners in the Promote the Vote contest and thank you to everyone who helped spread the word and voted regularly.

Schools in Unity are full of activity since resuming classes this month. Unity Public School held their welcome back breakfast and now it's the high school's turn as they host Welcome Week running from Sept 16 - 20. They have a variety of spirit days and activities planned that includes the ever popular chili cook-off.

Proceeds from this year's cook-off are earmarked for the training fund of former UCHSer, Alyssa Weninger, who came to talk to the school about her strategies for success on the Team Canada women's rowing team, and on aiming to earn an Olympic spot for this team in Rio in 2016.

Besides the football team being on the field regularly, the Warriors volleyball teams are on the go every weekend to tournaments, as well as at regular practices and league play. Two junior girls', two senior girls' as well as junior and senior boys' teams are setting the stage for their respective district playdowns in late October.

St. Peter's is welcoming back students with a brand new addition to their playground that they continue to fundraising for. As well, the school has kick-started the band program again.

Bake it, make it and grow it folks are still busy at the farmers' market held in the Adanac Hall each Thursday. If you aren't there early, you might miss out. Doors open at 4 p.m.

The fabulous weather has benefitted the new pool construction. The excitement continues on the newly formed "Mount Goldsworthy" created from the excavation of the former tennis courts in preparing the site.

This weekend it's Minor Football Day in Unity. The Unity Minor Football organization hosts an annual event that includes all divisions of flag and tackle football. The day includes a food booth, as well as a raffle table. There are also prizes on the silent auction table, including a signed Durant football and a signed Dressler helmet.

Proceeds from this event go towards the refurbishing of Warrior Field. The field needs to be levelled and crowned for proper drainage to be an effective venue.

Speaking of football, hats off to the UCHS Warriors who won their two opening games handily. Fans are excited to see them in the first home game action Sept. 19 when they host Aberdeen.

A new score clock adorns the rink wall thanks to JayDee AgTech. Hockey will begin with a three-on-three tournament starting Sept. 30 and running until mid-October. Registration has taken place and a number of teams will be hitting the ice. With last year being so successful, fans, players and parents are anxious to raise all those championship banners earned last season in multiple divisions.

The annual Terry Fox Run takes place this Sunday.Organizers are hopeful for a good turnout as this event celebrates its 30th year in Unity. You can walk, run, bike or blade the 10-kilometre track. Participants can cool down with refreshments following the event. All money raised goes towards cancer patient research.

The annual fall fair and trade show is Oct. 4 and 5, which means it's time to start mounting those prize photos, finishing your sewing projects and perfecting your best preserves and baking. Fall fair booklets can be purchased at Mitchell Agencies for $1. Sixty-plus vendors have signed up for trade show tables. Delta Co-op and Unity Credit Union are hosting the Saturday morning pancake breakfast. The weekend's event comes complete with a delectable food booth too. Admission is $2.

KC Rescue has launched a Raise the Woof fundraiser? This event will be held Oct. 4 at Bluez on 2nd. Advanced tickets only $15 for this stand-up comedy show that also will include draws and a silent auction. Tickets can be purchased at Bluez or call 306-228-2583.

A Saskatchewan Safety Council babysitting course will be held Oct. 18 and 19 at the Unity Community Resource Centre. Cost is $30 per participant and you can contact Kristi at the UCRC at 306-228-4042 for details.

Coffee row conversation is a flurry of discussion about the Riders after they suffered two straight losses and have three players up on assault charges. Harvest is a topic that is always front and centre, discussing the lack of rain as well as the progress harvesters have seen. September always brings a full slate of activities to discuss and review.
