The fear of public speaking is widely considered to be, by far, the most common phobia suffered by adults. With the 4-H motto being “learn to do by doing,” 24 youngsters ages six to 18 overcame that fear in the Senlac Hall on Feb. 7.
Standing in front of a sizeable audience of fellow 4-H members, parents, siblings, judges and guests, members of the Senlac 4-H Multiple and Unity Community 4-H clubs each spoke on a topic of his or her choice. Speeches ranged in length from one to two minutes for the youngest members to five minutes or more for seniors.
The young CloverBuds spoke on things familiar to them such as hockey, living on the farm, a favourite pet or their families. Older members presented researched facts on topics as diverse as the history of the mustang horse, basketball and life hacks.
The top four speakers in each age group were: CloverBuds, ages six to eight: first Reid Ducherer, second Chance Pipke, third Wyatt Clarke and fourth Haley Clarke; juniors, ages nine to 12, first Jesse Deck, second Kerrigan Bowey, third Taylor Ducherer and fourth Shayna Dekoning; intermediates, ages 13 to 15, first Katrina Gallan, second Christopher Wiens, third Sean Ellwood and fourth William Ganser; and seniors, ages 16 to 21, first Damien Bowey, second Kelsey Wiens, third Breanna Landry and fourth Lacey Gallinger.
The top two in each age category will compete at the regional 4-H level in Langham April 3.
