Child Find Saskatchewan has a new magazine out called Alert. In it you will find all sorts of tips and information. May is Missing Children's month and during May green ribbons are worn to represent missing children.

I'm sure some of you will be interested in the history of the Green Ribbon Of Hope campaign. In April 1992, Kristen French, a student at Holy Cross Secondary school in St. Catharines, Ont., went missing, just one month before her 16th birthday. The students and faculty wore green ribbons in the hope she would return home safely. However, that would not be the case. She continues to be remembered, missed and loved by her family, her friends and all who knew her. Her fellow students, teachers and friends chose the Green Ribbon of Hope as the symbol for their search.

The family and school community gave Child Find the exclusive rights to the Green Ribbon of Hope, worn now to symbolize hope and to show support for the families of missing children. Child Find Canada has trademarked the Green Ribbon of Hope campaign.

From 1990 to 1993, at the request of Child Find Saskatchewan, the government proclaimed Missing Children's Week in the Province of Saskatchewan. In 1994, this designation was changed with the legislature proclaiming the entire month of May as Missing Children's Month.

Over the years, Child Find Saskatchewan has sent requests to the councils of towns and cities asking them to proclaim initially a day, then a week and finally the entire month of May as Missing Children's Month. Proclamations have been given by the Government of Saskatchewan, the cities of Regina, Prince Albert, Estevan, Yorkton, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Swift Current, North Battleford, Melfort, Lloydminster, Melville and Weyburn and the towns of Kindersley, Nipawin and Battleford.

May 1, 2012 marked the start of the 21st annual Green Ribbon of Hope campaign. The Green Ribbon of Hope has united villages, towns, cities, the province and the nation to show support to families of missing children for the past 21 years. The Green Ribbon continues to be recognized as a symbol to remember missing children and to seek their safe return.

A missing child is everyone's responsibility. Go online to read this magazine or contact Child Find Saskatchewan if you would like to be on their mailing list. I would like to thank the News-Optimist for posting pictures of missing children when space is available.
