The high school track meet was held May 25 and 26 in North Battleford. The weather co-operated so all the events were able to be completed. The school sent a full team of athletes from students in Grades 7 to 12.

All the athletes tried their best and staff are very proud of them. Congratulations to Autumn Amson for her first place finish in the discus throw. She qualified to attend the provincial track and field meet. Jocelyn Bzdel finished second in the javelin throw and also gets to attend the provincial meet.

Keara Amson, Grade 8, finished sixth overall in her age group. Her older brother, Carter Amson, finished seventh overall, in total points, in his age group.

Good luck to the two athletes who will represent Maymont Central School, and the district, at the provincial meet June 6.

The Grades 1 to 6 classes had a very enjoyable field trip, May 29. They spent the morning at Fort Battleford. They learned a lot about the history of this area and were able to tour the buildings. They saw the sick horse stables, a home and even spent some time in a very small jail cell. After the tour, they played some old-fashioned games on the grounds. They had the opportunity to jump in burlap sacks and "Kick the Can." They even watched a NWMP officer sew up the holes in his clothes.

Modern times soon crept back in when many of the students were taking pictures of the artifacts with their cellphones.

The weather was beautiful, so the students and staff members stayed at the Fort and ate their lunches at the picnic tables by the main building.

The next stop was the NationsWEST Field House for some exercise. The large turf room was rented and students had a chance to play soccer, T-ball, invent some parachute games and many other activities. They certainly ran off a lot of energy.

Maymont Central School held its graduation Friday, May 30. There were 10 students in this year's class. Although the students celebrated their accomplishments, they also felt an absence in their evening. Their classmate, Kelly Langley, was missing from the group. He had passed away, tragically, in a car accident last June. His absence and importance to his classmates was mentioned several times throughout the ceremonies.

A banquet was held in the school gym. It was catered by Cando Catering and was delicious. Braidi Sauvie was the MC for the banquet. Mrs. Brehon introduced all the graduates and their escorts. Brady Ferris gave the toast to the parents and his father, Greg Ferris, replied. He reminded the graduates that they were like geese leaving the nest but would always have that nest to come home to when they needed or wanted it.

Jordan Manson gave a toast to the staff and this was replied to by Mr. Ryan Nickell. The blessing was said by Carter Amson.

The graduation exercises started at 7:30 p.m., when Mrs. Brehon introduced the class and their escorts. She spoke about each graduate, their contributions to the school and their plans for the future.

The MCs for the evening were Carter Amson and Kcarli Maxwell. They added some humour to the evening and did an excellent job.

Following the singing of O Canada, Jesse Greenslade was introduced as the class valedictorian. He gave an excellent speech and talked about each of his classmates.

Next year's student leadership president, Carlee Hamilton, along with Patience Brown, presented a gift to each member of the Grade 12 class.

The awards were presented next. Kelsie Fouhy, a member of last year's graduating class, received the Proficiency Award and the Governor General's Medal. She is currently attending the University of Saskatchewan.

Jesse Greenslade received the Living Sky School Division Board of Education Award, the Paul Voegeli Scholarship, and the Social Studies Award. Kcarli Maxwell was awarded the English Award, the MCHS Spirit Award and the Innovation Credit Union Spirit Award.

The graduating class presented long-stemmed red roses to their mothers and then watched a PowerPoint presentation about their lives. It was very touching. Brady Ferris had done a lot of the work on this presentation.

The ceremonies concluded with the presentation of the scrolls to the students by Mr. Lockwood.

A social was held with fruit and loaves. The Grade 11 students and parents looked after this and helped at the banquet. The evening concluded with a grand march. The rest of the students and all the staff wish the graduating class of 2014 all the best for a healthy, happy future.

Congratulations to former student, Tyler Phaneuf, as he will receive his dentistry degree this Friday from the University of Saskatchewan. He will then begin work in Regina.
