Well, this Saturday, will March come in like a lamb or a lion? I know I join the thousands of people who are hoping for lamb-like conditions until spring. Enough winter already! Especially when it continues to bring these ridiculously continuous cold temperatures.

How are you holding up with your Olympic hangover? If you are like our household, you are only getting a brief breather as the start of the Brier will once again keep our television working overtime.

This weekend will be another Saturday and Sunday that heavily involves the TV and couch, as not only does the Brier start but so does the annual Telemiracle. Local group, Lonely J, which includes Travis Gerein, Jesse Lang, Carolyn Kopp and Brent Reiter, will take to the stage Saturday evening at approximately 11:45 p.m.

This telethon has seen 38 successful years because communities like ours choose to make it a priority for their charitable giving. Ring those phones, folks!

Congratulations to McKenna Vany who was a bronze medalist at the recent Saskatchewan Winter Games in alpine skiing. McKenna joined several other athletes from Unity on the Rivers West Sports District team, including Breanna Elder, Jarred Risling and Daylyn McCubbing. Also, from UCHS, Zoher Rafid-Hamed was a badminton official.

Unity Composite High School will soon host the annual junior high Sno-Olympics. This event is a fun way to engage younger students while promoting team and school spirit, and it holds a never-ending entertainment value for all participants.

Junior curlers competed at district playdowns this week at the Unity curling rink. It must be a sure sign of spring - badminton is back. As well UCHS track team members continue to practise indoors preparing for their season upcoming in about eight weeks.

Grad students are busy with scholarship and post-secondary school plans as well as ramping up plans for graduation in June. And kudos to those students who chose to use their "nominations" for something positive in their world, demonstrating a strong moral compass of students from our high school.

Don't forget you can always log on to the www.lskysd.ca website and click on schools to choose UCHS and read all about what is happening at our high school, in addition to finding the latest copies of the newsletter.

Unity Public School Grade 6 students will be heading off to their annual division bonspiel after practising since the beginning of January. The music festival choir is in preparations for this year's music festival. Another report card set is nearly ready.

Students and staff supervisors are feeling the cabin fever of winter and hoping increased daylight time will soon bring the spring we've all been yearning for.

St. Peter's School band will be the feature entertainment at the upcoming Lions' evening out, which is a great testament to the talent this group has developed under the excellent direction of Mrs. Keller. The school is also in preparations for the annual music festival which will be upon us before we know it.

Lenten season activities, leading up to Easter, will also be in evidence at St. Peter's in the weeks ahead.

Hockey season is near completion. Some teams have been done a couple of weeks now and some teams continue their quests for a championship banner to once again hang in their home arena.

The Unity Miners have advanced to league semifinals so they could use all the support we can give them as they aim for a league title.

The Unity Skating Club is in the last leg of preparations for their annual ice carnival to be held next Friday, March 7.

Your best bet for knowing what is going on at the rink is to check the schedule hanging in the lobby or the Town of Unity website.

Affinity Credit Union Senior Men's and Women's Provincial Curling wrapped up Feb. 23. Unity was very proud to have two local teams in the event, both of whom played very well, drawing in good crowds over the six-day event.

Team Glen Heitt was edged out by one by Team Schick who went on to the final match and lost a close match to the Darrell McKee rink out of Saskatoon. Wanda Heitt and the Team Gillies squad lost a close match to the Saguin rink out of Moose Jaw in the final for the provincial title.

The Lions Club does a great number of fabulous community service deeds around town in addition to supporting a variety of funding efforts in our community. Why not consider this your way of thanking them, by supporting an event they are hosting?

You know what's also coming up in March - two local co-operatives' annual meetings. In addition to a great meal, you can hear about the success of Unity Credit Union and Delta Co-op, both of which not only operate successful businesses in town, but contribute to our local economy in employment, revenue and choosing to give back to the communities they serve in sponsorships and volunteer efforts.

Coffee row can still be heard revelling in our Olympic success this year. They have also been discussing curling's - both local and televised - season of champions, as well as the local provincial hockey quests. The weather theories are evolving for the upcoming spring. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week.
