Wednesday, March 13 an interactive career expo, entitled Try-A-Trade, will be held at the new field house in North Battleford. It's free to attend and runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Exhibitors will provide a hands-on activity at each booth to demonstrate the trade they represent. From construction to hairdressing, participants will have a chance to get involved and experience these trades first hand. Over 1,200 students and approximately 40 exhibitors have registered. It is being presented by the North West Regional College in conjunction with North West Career Development Partnership, Saskatchewan Ministry of the Economy, Potash Corp and Skills Canada.

That same afternoon, two authors will be reading at the North Battleford Library. Terry Chamberlain, author of Stories in the Dirt, will read from his new book revolving around homestead years, farm life, education and Saskatchewan History. Laurie Lynn Muirhead will read from Bone Sense, poems reflecting the land, climate, cattle, coyotes and weather.

Other events on tap this coming week include a magazine launch, chili cookoff and "hot" entertainment. Then, of course, there is St. Patrick's Day to celebrate.

Friday, March 15 at 7 p.m. at Crandleberry's in North Battleford will see the launch of the second issue of Feed the Artist, a magazine aiming to embrace, promote and feed arts and culture in the Battlefords. It was developed by volunteers to showcase local talent and promote the arts and culture community in the Battlefords. The first issue came out in June of 2012, with the theme Seeds (a seed represents endless possibilities). This issue's theme is Progress. There will be music by Sally in the Valley.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 9's fifth annual Smokin' Hot Chili Cookoff is this Saturday, March 16 at the Legion Hall on main street in Battleford. Bring your best, hottest chili in a crockpot to the hall at 1 p.m. that afternoon. Judging starts at 2:30 p.m. Best part? The chili will be for sale after the judging. Mmm!

For more heat, the Hot Tamales will be on stage at the Richard Hall Saturday evening. Hosted by the Richard Curling Club, it's widely known that anything can, and usually does, happen when the Hot Tamales are in charge of entertainment. Supper is at 6 p.m. with the show to follow, so make arrangements to get your advance tickets.

The next day, Sunday, March 17, burn off all Saturday's good food, or just cheer on the swimmers if you haven't registered yet, at Shamrock-A-Thon at the Battlefords Co-op Aquatic Centre. There will be 3km and 5km River Runs starting at 1 p.m. or 3 p.m. There will be a gold medal for the best time, but there will also be prizes for the most creative team name, perseverance, wearing the most "green" and for showing the most enthusiasm.

There will be more wearing of the green at the St. Patrick's Supper and Dance being put on by Team Diabetes at the Air Cadets Hall in North Battleford.
