Trees by the thousands add up to millions

Could this student be running from mosquitoes? The little pests were determined, but so were the members of Battleford Central School's Me To We Club who helped plant 1,000 at the site of the former Battleford dump on May 22.

Students from Battleford Central School's Me To We Club were out helping the Battleford 2000 and Historic Battleford Lions Clubs May 22 with the planting of another 1,000 trees on the site of the town's former dump. Last year, a number of volunteers planted the first 1,000 in an event also organized by the local Lions.

The students, along with some helpful moms, planted the saplings in the previously dug holes, heroically fighting mosquitoes throughout the morning event.

There were 25 to 30 youngsters planting spruce, olive, chokecherry and pine trees, and other varieties, all donated by the SaskPower Shand Greenhouse.

Now that they are in the ground, the Town of Battleford will be responsible for watering and caring for the trees.

Last year, the local Lions decided on the tree-planting project after the 2011-12 International Lions president declared Lions organizations around the world should plant a million trees. During the 2011-2012 fiscal year, Lions reported planting over 15 million trees world-wide.
