Calvin and Sarah Lafreniere, along with their three children and together with another young family from Hafford, have safely returned from a 10-day holiday in Guayabitos, Mexico. This is a popular beach resort a two-hour drive from Puerto Vallarta. They report there were many attractions to see and fun activities to partake in.
My husband and I were at TCU Centre Tuesday evening amongst hundreds of others to see the entertainer Johnny Reid. He put on an excellent concert along with fiddle player Natalie McMaster. Aaron Goodvin and the JJ Shiplett Band were the opening acts before Reid took the stage. Shiplett was a popular name in North Battleford many years ago. I remember my parents, Joe and Irene Gregoire, purchasing baby chicks from Shiplett Hatcheries when I was a child. JJ mentioned one of his brothers was born in North Battleford and he is still connected to this city.
There were 17 people in attendance at the Mayfair Housing Authority annual supper Feb. 12. The meal was prepared and served by a couple of ladies from the local CWL. Believe me, nobody went away hungry. Board members are Sally Salisbury, Anne Van Nortwick, Alice Grigor, Heather Welsh and Ellyn Scotton.
Julian Goyan's brother Myron and Linda from near Cold Lake, Alta. came for a visit to Julian and Shirley's farm near Whitkow. Turtle Lake was a big attraction for ice fishing, which they thoroughly enjoyed.
Former Mullingar resident, 92-year-old Mary Froese, passed away Feb. 4. She was briefly battling pancreatic cancer and apparently was in no pain, according to her granddaughter Kim Larson. She was predeceased by her husband Peter and two sons Eric and Harvey.
Harvey was a well-known farmer in the Mayfair-Rabbit Lake area and built a thriving business called H & T Processing. Upon his retirement, son Terry took over for a couple of years. Today it is owned by Danny Wright and called Wright Choice Grain Cleaning in Rabbit Lake. Mary's daughter Valerie is in an assisted living home in Saskatoon.
The Giesbrecht family at Mullingar are all related to this former pioneer. Can you imagine that at the ripe age of 65, Mary Froese obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work from the University of Saskatchewan. She was a wonderful individual always wanting to help others, even assisting the elderly at her own age of 88.
I was fortunate to be able to attend the Saskatoon funeral and visit with others I have not seen in years.
A new addition was welcomed into Joe and Jen Lange's family recently. Their new baby boy is a little brother to a sister and brother. Sandra and Dan Lange are the proud grandparents.
