It is the season for poinsettias and what a beautiful plant it is. For years we've heard poinsettias are poisonous. But are they really? Parents magazines, medical books and guides, and even doctors and veterinarians cautioned us to keep the plants out of the reach of children and pets for fear that they might nibble on the flowers or the leaves, which were believed to be toxic. In fact, some books still indicate poinsettias are poisonous. Thanks to more recent testing, however, it is no longer necessary to keep these plants on high shelves and out of reach. The long-standing belief that poinsettias were poisonous has finally been proven to be nothing more than a myth, a false alarm.

There will be a pot luck Christmas supper at Ruddell Dec. 20. Supper is at 6 p.m. and everyone is welcome.

Don Spence's recent battle with the chain saw (the chain saw won), serves as a reminder to be careful when using chain saws. They can be really dangerous. Heal well, Don.

I would like to thank all who called and were concerned about my recent medical problem and for your concerns about our son, Shawn. We both have some health problems to work out but are OK.

Here is some information that might help just in case you think you might be having a heart attack or stroke. Reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke. Did you know heart disease and stroke are Canada's leading cause of death? A great place to start is to learn to identify and control your risk factors. While you can't control your age, family history, gender or ethnicity, there are many other risk factors such as obesity, diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure and elevated blood cholesterol that you can control. Talk to your health care professional. Take the first step towards a longer, healthier life. Warning signals of a heart attack include sudden discomfort of pain that does not go away with rest. Pain may be in the chest, neck, jaw, shoulder arms or back. It may feel like burning, squeezing, heaviness, tightness or pressure. In women pain may be more vague. Other symptoms are shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, nausea, indigestion or vomiting, sweating, cool, clammy skin, fear, anxiety and denial. If you experience the warning signals of a heart attack you should immediately call 911 or have someone call for you. Stop all activity and sit or lie down, in whatever position is most comfortable.
