Battleford Community Players will be presenting the first Saskatchewan staging of Trad, by contemporary Irish playwright Mark Doherty, at the Dekker Centre for the Performing Arts Tuesday, April 22 to Saturday, April 25.
"The play is a marvelous piece of folk literature, mischievously presented by a seasoned company of actors," says Lloyd Deshaye, who will be directing Trad.Â
The cast members are Jim Walls, Glen Rubidge, Clint Barrett and Liz Smith. Shelly Bretzer is the stage manager, and musicians Brian Wappel and Tyrel Smith are also involved.
"The play spins the tale of an elderly Thomas and his Da, who undertake a journey which reflects their lives together, and in the course of which they struggle to confront their personal foibles, versions of history, loyalty and pride of tradition," says Deshaye.
He adds, "The play is written with a wealthy mix of Irish humour, the bad luck of Irish history, the absurdity of addled memory and many playful echoes of the past."
Colm Toibin, writing a review of Trad for the Galway Arts Festival, said: “The play does not depend on plot, or perfectly rounded characters. It depends instead on a peculiar energy, edgy, jerky, immensely funny, and fast and clever.â€
Richly presented with clever stage effects and live musicians, the play promises superb entertainment for all audiences, says Deshaye.
"We welcome our audience with enthusiasm and the anticipation of side-splitting enjoyment and hope they will delight in this hilarious yet moving season finale."
Tickets are available from the Dekker Centre box office.
