John Paul II Collegiate has debuted a new course this fall, which is simply titled Tourism B30.

In this program, students in Division 4 have the opportunity to participate in 50 hours of work study and receive certificates in the Tourism and Hospitality industry. The course is run by Mr. McQuaid.

Earlier this month, the students participating in the program received their WHMIS certificates. The students will also be receiving Food Safety and Service Best certificates later on in the course. The students complete the certification courses to increase the chance of employment in the future. The course also focuses on proper resumé construction and proper customer service.

The students spend two periods each day working in the tourism course, and they're due to complete the course by the end of November. The rest of the semester will be spent doing a Christian Ethics course.

The class spends a small portion of their time in the actual classroom. The students are placed in different places around the community, such as the CuPlex, Western Development Museum, the Co-op, or places where the students already have jobs.

There are nine students enrolled in the program, and they're currently planning a welcome night for John Paul II's international students Dec. 8.

The Tourism course is a smart way to learn about and prepare for the work industry, and will surely change the futures of the students involved in it.
