Tomorrow at the Rider game, Unity will find out if they secured a top eight spot from the 29 entries in the Richardson Pioneer sponsored Grey Cup Rider 101 Community Celebration contest. The original Riderville committee, who secured runner-up status in the centennial celebration, is poised and ready to rush into action when the announcement is made. Cross your fingers, folks; we must be due!

The senior Cardinals hosted provincials in Unity last weekend. Twenty-five degrees and sunshine made for perfect weather for both players and spectators and good crowds were on hand throughout the weekend to watch this event.

A testament to the minor ball programs in Unity, several players have made it post-season to compete at higher levels. Rhett Feser was chosen to be part of Team Saskatchewan competing at this year's Canada Summer Games in Quebec. Rhett made three plate appearances and chalked up five strikeouts. Team Sask went 4-1 in the round robin but fell to 0-2 in playoffs, finishing sixth overall.

Mackenzie Chorney and Ally Cey, picked up to play with the Kindersley Royals in the Western Canadian Softball U18 championships in Richmond, B.C., had a round robin finish of 4-2. Playoffs saw them easily win the quarter-final against B.C. which put them in Sunday's semifinal against another Saskatchewan team, one they had beaten at provincials. Earl Grey came out on top though, leaving these girls with a bronze at Western Canadians. Congratulations, girls.

Blake Robertson, who played with the Lloyd Twins and captured a provincial title, is competing at the Midget Western Canadian Baseball Championships this weekend in Swift Current.

Three kids from our provincial champion peewee team have been picked up for the AA Peewee Westerns in Swift Current Aug. 15-18: Jacob Mamer and Brett Hampson by host Swift Current, and Tanner Huber by the AA provincial champs Humboldt. We will keep you up to date on their progress as well.

Brennae Hofmann and Ashley Mock, along with Unity coaches Pat Risling, John "Huntzie" Klaehn and Don Robertson are part of the Zone 7 team competing September long weekend at the Fall Ball Provincial Championships to be held at the Battlefords Flats.

Brennae Hofmann and Emily Mabbet are two bantam players that have made the second round of cuts for the Western Canada Summer Games team so we will be keeping an eye on their progress as well.

Kelsey Wildeman and Shelby Solomko earned a spot on the University of Saskatchewan fast-pitch team for the upcoming season. Kelsey played with the team last year and this will be Shelby's first year on the team. They have begun regular practices and start out their season September long weekend in Calgary.

Unity Minor Football (UMF) is getting ready to hit the field. Once again there will be flag football for Grades 2-3 and 4-6. The club will host a six-man tackle team for Grade 6-8s who will participate in the NorthWest Minor Football League, which will include six teams - doubling the three teams last year.

Registration will take place Aug. 28 at 6 p.m. on Warrior Field. Flag football registration will be Sept. 2 at 4 p.m. in the UCHS junior gym. The UMF day and jamboree will be in September. Organizers are very excited about the growth of the program as many new youth football programs are sprouting up across Saskatchewan.

Mark Sept. 8 on your calendars as there will be a 30th anniversary celebration tea and display for the Terry Fox Run. If you have been a part of this event in the past, always admired the courage of Terry Fox or have experienced cancer in your family, why not use this momentous milestone to be part of the Terry Fox Run in Unity? The Terry Fox Run itself will be Sept. 22.

What's this? A dodgeball tournament in Unity? Why, yes. You can take part in a dodgeball tournament Sept. 8 starting at 10 a.m. for fun and as a fundraiser for the Unity Facilities Committee. Register your eight-person team by contacting Chelsea Robertson or Riley Shepherd at Trans Gas or contact Carey Baker at the Town of Unity.

The fifth annual Candace Heitt Memorial Run is Sept. 15. You can register online or pick up a pamphlet at Heitt's Plumbing and Heating.

Excited reviews of the Rider season are still a regular topic on coffee row. Even though the Riders posted their first loss against the Stamps Aug. 9, fans know this year's team is hungry for a Grey Cup berth as hosts. Tomorrow, Aug. 16, is the 36th anniversary of the death of the King, Elvis Presley.

So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week.
