The Borden Lions Club held an appreciation barbecue at the home of Don and Claudia Dyck of Borden Aug. 1.

Special guests were Lions Walter and Marilyn Zaleschuk of Nutana Lions; those who had helped out the club in the past year - Eric and Darlene Pearce, Cyril and Louise Saunders; and the guests/spouses of Lion members. Happy Birthday was sung to Don Dyck who just turned 81 and Murray Taylor who is turning 90. They blew out the candles on a special cake.

Walter, who is the Lions Club International 5SKN co-ordinator, was on hand to present Melvin Jones Fellow awards to three deserving Lions, Don Dyck, Helen Sutherland and Wendell Dyck. Don is a founding member of Borden Lions, has been president a few times and is a member of the Archie's Angels choral group and the meat cook for the many catering jobs over the years. Sutherland joined in 2000, as soon as women were allowed to join, and has contributed and volunteered in many ways, especially with catering events. Wendell, a founding member and part of Archie's Angels, has been the treasurer for 28 years, the longest standing officer in the club, and has been a great worker over the years.

The plaque, which reads "Lions International Foundation Melvin Jones Fellow presented to for dedicated humanitarian services to Lions Clubs International," is given in memory of Melvin Jones, the founder of ILC. The Fellowship donates to Third World countries for river blindness, has the Lion's Quest program to educate youth against drugs and contributes to local programs and around the globe for sight, Seeing Eye dogs, diabetes and measles immunization for 60 million children. They put the elevator in the new Ronald McDonald house in Saskatoon and donated to High River, Alta., flood relief. ILC donates $7.8 million worldwide.

John and Miriam Buswell travelled to Prince Albert Aug. 1 to receive a plaque in honour of having registered Aberdeen Angus cattle on their farm for 30 years.
