The Third Avenue United Church is celebrating "A Century of Christian Mission and Service" this year on June 8 and 9.

To spearhead the event and raise money for the church, the United Church Women held a tea party and bake sale, Saturday, May 4. Making this event extra special the UCW brought back there old school flair by dressing in apparel similar to that worn by women dressed in the time when the church first opened.

The UCW along with the Third Avenue United Church have worked hard to bring faith to others and bring community together. Originally founded in 1962 with the amalgamation of two groups - the Ladies' Aid and Women's Missionary Society, the UCW have been putting on events like this for quite some time now. The Ladies' Aid was responsible for local obligations, with money earned by them contributed to the local treasury. The Woman's Missionary Society mainly provided assistance to missionary work in Canada and abroad, financially and otherwise.

Through the various fundraising events, work within the church in the local community and abroad, the UCW have volunteered their time for over 50 years. The ladies' tea held was just one more example of the UCW's continued commitment to the church and our community.

The celebration of "A Century of Christian Mission and Service" will begin Saturday June 8 with an evening registration and reception, and several activities will take place Sunday, June 9. The church is asking participants to register by May 15.

When the United Church of Canada came into being in 1925, two North Battleford church bodies, Knox Presbyterian, which dates back to 1913, and the Methodist Presbyterian, combined to form Third Avenue United Church. The new church was built on the corner of 3rd Avenue (now 13th Avenue) and 102nd Street.
