The Borden Care Home Auxiliary held their annual Christmas tea Dec. 4 with an excellent turnout. The funds raised will fill Christmas stockings for the 17 residents of the home. Entertaining was the Borden Friendship Club Choir, who sang eight familiar Christmas Carols, closing with We Wish You a Merry Christmas. The door prize of a poinsettia was won by Helen Taylor of Hafford.
Evelyn Paulson of Langham was selling tickets on two quilts — a queen and a double — that she has made for a raffle Jan. 1. Proceeds are going to purchase new seating in the common/TV room. Tickets are $2 each, three for $5 or a book for $20 (three are free) and are for sale at the home, Borden Co-op or from board members.
The Borden Farmers’ Market Christmas sale was held Dec. 5 in the Borden Community Centre, with 13 vendors. Eleven additional vendors were selling their goods in the seniors’ club room. Grad 2016 sold lunch of soup or stew with a bun, desserts and beverages and were sold out by early afternoon except for desserts. The RM of Great Bend No. 405 donated the juice and use of a large beverage container.
 Grad 2016 had a raffle draw and winning the three bags full of goodies were Claudia Dyck, Natalie Elliot and Carol Crabb. Winning $10 cheques from the farmers’ market purchasers’ draw were Jerry Duda of Borden, Diane Rounce of Langham and from Saskatoon, Edna England, Mea Polski and Melanie Propp. Audrey Baker had a Regal door prize and that was won by L. Olinyk.
The Borden Farmers’ Market donated funds of $250 to the Borden Fire Department, $50 to Grad 2016 and an appreciation cheque to Peter Thiessen. Thanks to the grad students and parents who helped put up and take down all the tables in the main hall and seniors’ room.
Dec. 3 and 4, a total of 44 members of the Borden Friendship Club travelled to Saskatoon to attend a dinner theatre at Mayfair United Church. The meal was excellent and the play, A Bad Day for Tomatoes, was hilarious in a silly kind of way. Everyone enjoyed the evening courtesy of the Borden Friendship Club bingo fund. The next bingo at the Borden Seniors’ Room is Dec. 16 at 7 p.m., with turkeys and ham for prizes.
Saturday is Santa Claus Day in Radisson, with Santa arriving at 2 p.m. to hand out treat bags courtesy of Radisson Fire Department. The Radisson Royal Purple will hold a tea, bake sale and raffle in the Radisson Hall from 2 - 4 p.m.
The Borden Lions held their annual Festival of Music Dec. 6 in the Borden Community Centre. The Lion’s Choir started the evening singing Some See Candles Glow and Christmas Almost at Hand with Bob Wardhaugh playing keyboard. The Prairie Players from Langham performed. The children sang A Baby Was Born and the ladies joined in for Let Him In to Your Heart. The group will be performing in a musical play in Borden on Friday. Bus Stop 23 begins at 7 p.m. It will be performed in Langham Saturday.
Lion John Buswell related stories about this being the 50th year for Charlie Brown’s Christmas and quizzed the audience on the characters. The Siebert family then played a variety of Christmas music with Kimball playing mandolin, Nicholas on drums and Grace playing the piano. Grace played a piano solo and a duet with her mom Jodine. Julia played a piano solo and a duet with her mom. Rachel recited a poem and Kimball and Nicholas closed with Joy to the World.
With his wife Mary playing piano, Peter Thiessen sang Santa’s Using Zebras Now and Redeeming Love followed by the Three Silly Buggers – Archie Wainwright, Ed Neufeld and Bob Wardhaugh — performing Listen to the Children, Magic in the Air and Hear the Christmas Bells Ring.
George Spark related a story, A Child’s Christmas in Wales, then the Borden Friendship Club singers, with Marlene Derbawka directing, sang The Friendly Beast, What Child is This and Silver Bells.
Glenn Julseth, playing guitar and his wife Joan playing keyboard, sang If I Was There With Jesus, Let it Snow and It Came Upon the Midnight Clear. The Lions Chorus sang Peace Carol and Huron Carol, then led in community singing of 10 old favourite Christmas carols, closing with We Wish You a Merry Christmas.
