Sweetheart deal for Telemiracle

The Borden Friendship Club held their annual Valentine's Tea for Telemiracle Feb. 11 in their club room, with about 40 out to enjoy strawberry shortcake. Over 20 door prizes were handed out and the 50/50 of $29 went to Kathleen Pederson.

The Borden Friendship Club held their annual Valentine's Tea for Telemiracle Feb. 11 in their club room, with about 40 out to enjoy strawberry shortcake. Over 20 door prizes were handed out and the 50/50 of $29 went to Kathleen Pederson. The club sent in the proceeds from the tea and 50/50 of $165 to Telemiracle 2011.

The next event for the seniors is an afternoon program Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. when Dalmeny and Radisson seniors are invited.

At the seniors' business meeting Feb. 9, the club voted to purchase 10 six-foot fibreglass tables with folding legs that are to be used only in the club room. The old tables will be donated to the hall and placed in the basement for anyone wishing to use them. Two different chair styles were brought to try out and members will look into purchasing at a later date.

Condolences are extended to Laura Loeppky and family - five children, 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, on the passing of Harold Loeppky Feb. 4 at the age of 80 years after a brief illness. The memorial service was held Feb. 12 in the Borden Community Centre with Pastor Tony Martens presiding and the ladies of Riverbend Fellowship church serving lunch. Saskatoon Legion gave the Legion rites and a number of the family and Legion members laid poppies after Last Post and Reveille. Harold was in the armed forces and served in Canada during the Korean War, later working many places in various law enforcement capacities. Final resting place will be at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Saskatoon in the Garden of the Old Rugged Cross.

Condolences are also extended to the family of Vera Saunders at Borden -Ron and Mary and family and Cyril and Louise and family, who passed away Feb. 4 at the Langham Seniors' Home at the age of 95 years. The memorial service will be held later in March.

The Village of Borden, Borden Library and Welcome Wagon held a welcome to Borden event in the community centre Feb. 10. MC Dianne Sylvester welcomed everyone, then had each table work on a contest answering questions about Borden and area. Welcome and greetings were extended by Mayor David Buckingham and reeve of Great Bend No. 405 Ron Saunders.

Displays were set up around the hall by Affinity Credit Union, Borden Health Care Centre, farmers' market, dance club, parks and recreation board, Interchurch Youth Group and the museum. Speaking about their business or organization were Dianne for the library, bowling alley and Community Centre Preservation Committee, Archie Wainwright for the Lions Club, Lorraine Olinyk for the Borden seniors and farmers' market, Glenn Sutherland for parks and recreation, Rev. Jan for the youth group, Carl Kennedy on his insulation business and Terry Tkaczyk for volunteer firefighters and an upcoming first aid course. There were sheets on the tables for newcomers to fill in if they were interested in any of the organizations.

Dianne introduced newcomers present who had moved in to the village or RM since February of 2010.

Then everyone was entertained by JAM - Jamie Branderick on guitar and singing, Avery Fairbrother on guitar and Matt Fairbrother singing. They did a set of rock and roll numbers and a song they had written about a big old oak tree. They donned hats - coon, beaver and leopard - and had Peter Thiessen model a skunk hat while they sang about a skunk. JAM had Don Block pick on Avery's guitar while Matt and Jamie sang Cover of the Rolling Stones.

Draws were made and guessing the number of chocolate loonies in the jar was John Petrun with 97 (95 in jar). Door prizes were won by Ann Kohut, Karen Buckingham and Jean Graham, Anne Palmer, Mary Thiessen, Zach and McKinley Martens, Gary and Anne Palmer, Ken Tanchak, Frank Block, Gladys Wensley, Gabriel Lajoie, Jean Brooke, Marcelle Desrosier, Ann Brand, Karen Kerr, Justin and Greg Werona, Judy and Wendell Dyck, Glenn Sutherland, Eleanor Walton, Rod Roenspies, Lorne Anderson, Nick Siebert and Jean Graham.
