Because of the smoke in the air, skies have not been so bright sometimes. Over an inch of rain fell Friday night. The full moon July 12 was unusual. Some called it a "super" moon. This moon was at a point in time when it came closest to the Earth. I believe this occurs every 50 years. Even its colour was a little different.
Our thoughts and sympathy are with a former district resident Tony Kirkland, who now makes his home at Sechelt, B.C. His wife, Brenda (Weinhandl) passed away June 4. Brenda is survived by her husband, Tony, their daughter, Tiffany and her husband Darryl and their two daughters as well as other relatives and many friends. A date had not been set for her memorial.
Helena Pike, along with her family - Maurice and Ellen Oddan, Mark and Tracy Oddan and son Carter and Evelyn Janus and members of her family - travelled to Merritt, B.C. last week to attend a Janus family reunion July 11-13. Seventy-nine members attended the event that was held on a campground by a small river. The days were spent playing games, enjoying meals together, making use of the river and of course lots of visiting and getting acquainted with younger members of the family.
The original Janus family lived in the Battlevale district south of Waseca, where their father, an immigrant from Holland, and their mother, also from Holland, farmed. The six children all attended Battlevale School and it is mostly their descendants who are now part of the reunions that take place every three years.
