"Summer Time and the Sewing is Easy." So goes the first line of an aria composed by George Gershwin for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. Indeed, this wording is not quite correct, but with apologies to DuBose Heywood, the lyricist, the sentiments are much the same, as enthusiastic members of the Rivers' Edge Quilt Guild seek the cool environment of the Don Ross craft room and indulge themselves in the art of quilting.
No business meetings or formal instruction has taken place during summer months, but members have been working on individual projects, hopeful to complete them before the new season begins.
Not to be forgotten is the President's Challenge issued this past May by Carol Johnson. Remember ladies, May 2015 will arrive sooner than you think.
In late July, several members took the opportunity to attend a weekend retreat at Ilene's Quilting Plus in Unity, always a productive and fun filled time.
The new season begins Sept. 5, with a business meeting at 1 p.m. in the craft room. The guild welcomes new members, experienced quilters or not, who are invited to attend a monthly meeting to learn about the guild and its activities, which include individual project work, instructional opportunities and charity projects.
Current members will be anxious to learn of the program possibilities for the 2014-15 season envisioned by the program coordinator, Irene Greer, as well as renew their friendships with fellow quilters. The "Show and Tell" part of this first meeting will reveal the bounty of the summer quilting, inspiring many with new ideas and enthusiasm for future projects.
