Summer slows down, but not for the kids

It's that time of the summer when things slow down, the backyard or the lake beckons and gardeners are in their heyday. While adults may enjoy the slower pace, to kids, slower can mean boring. Not to worry, there are things for them to do.

It's that time of the summer when things slow down, the backyard or the lake beckons and gardeners are in their heyday. While adults may enjoy the slower pace, to kids, slower can mean boring. Not to worry, there are things for them to do.

This Friday, the second year for the Battlefords Wildlife Federation Nature Centre's day camps for children begins. The centre will host four camps, starting July 26, and running the following three Fridays as well, Aug. 2, 9 and 16. For $5 each day, children will be able to take part in activities and crafts at the facility from 1 to 5 p.m. Parents are advised to register their children beforehand. For more information contact the BWF by phone at 306-445-2433 or by email at [email protected].

Of course, you and your kids can visit the Nature Centre throughout the summer during their regular hours of operation. Those hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday. The Nature Centre is located just southwest of the city of North Battleford, off Highway 4 on River Valley Drive. There you can explore the prairie, wetland and forest habitats of the North Saskatchewan River Valley. Its unique location in the heart of the Aspen Parkland, which is a transitional area between the boreal forests to the north and the prairies to the south, is home to a wealth of plant and animals species.

Another fun-filled experience for kids is coming up. It's Pots, Pans and Calloused Hands Kids Day Camps at the Western Development Museum. For ages seven to 10, it's a chance to journey back in time and experience pioneer life. It will run from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day from Monday, July 29 to Friday, Aug. 2. But remember to register first. Registration deadline is July 26. Activities will include wagon rides, gardening, ice cream making, butter churning, milking "Bessie," scavenger hunts, crafts, games and more. Lunch and snacks are provided. Here's another example of the benefits of having a Western Development Museum Membership. Registration fees for non members are $45 per day or $160 per week. For members, the fees are $40 per day or $150 for the week.

Like the Nature Centre, you can visit with your kids anytime during regular hours, which are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. While you're there check into buying a membership!
