As August creeps into the end of summer, folks are still trying to cool off from the heat wave that hit Aug. 12 and seemed to linger for a long time, although the rain that everyone waited for in June and decided to arrive in late August didn鈥檛 garner leaps of joy either. Disbelief is common in many who find it hard to believe that in a few short weeks school will be back in session and we will be talking about the summer of 2015 in past tense.
More and more harvest activity is underway and thoughts are varying on what kind of crops will come off after the prolonged dry weather experienced this spring and early summer. Those who had gardens, and were lucky enough to have them produce in this dry weather, will be busy canning and processing their harvest for the winter. There are always neighbours with an abundance of produce who are willing to share their product. And we are lucky to have those folks who take their additional garden product to the weekly farmers market for others to purchase and enjoy some terrific homegrown fresh garden vegetables.
Multiple ball players are in tryouts for winter training teams and the 2017 Canada Summer Games. Some squirt girls participated in Fall Ball Zone Provincial Championships Aug. 21 weekend in Regina. Even though the action of the diamonds has subsided, there is still some ball action taking place for Unity players. 聽
The Unity Credit Union Aquatic Centre has wrapped up for this season. They had a unique event for the closing hours holding a Pooch Plunge the Sunday evening of the last day of the pool. Folks were invited to bring their dogs, free of charge, for an evening swim. What a unique adventure it was!
A big thank you to Natalie and all the lifeguards for ensuring a safe swimming season for everyone, as well as hosting some fun events for the kids this past summer. It was a terrific inaugural year for the new pool, thanks to the aquatic centre staff.
Two big events coming up at the Unity Golf Course in addition to their weekly golf nights are the annual Fun Day of Golf and Candace Heitt Memorial Run. Be sure to keep an eye on the local paper, posters around town and the Town of Unity website for more details.

Speaking of businesses in Unity and all that they offer, a big congratulations is extended to Geraldine Barrett of Sunrise Wellness Spa who held her 35th anniversary celebration in Unity this week. Committing to operate a business in small-town Saskatchewan for 35 years is a remarkable accomplishment. Sunrise Wellness Spa is certainly one of the many drawing cards for other people to come to our town and see what we are all about.

In addition to mentioning all the fall registrations that are upcoming, remember all of these organizations, as well as our service clubs, will be looking for some new members to join their ranks. We can count ourselves lucky to have the service clubs as well as executives that run the many activities in town; ask yourself if you can be part of the process by volunteering some time to help one of these groups out. It will benefit us all!
Cam Broten was at the Adanac Hall to meet folks at a meet and greet event. This is one of many events and activities hosted regularly at our Unity Museum grounds. Following KC Rescue鈥檚 reorganization/information meeting Aug. 12, it was learned KC Rescue will be moving to the old pool building, hoping to complete the relocation process by mid-September. Coffee row folks 鈥 well they have uttered the same collective sigh as many in Rider nation over the plight of our Riders. The same theories erupt 鈥 it鈥檚 not that they鈥檙e playing bad football and each of the eight losses have been painfully close; however, that does not erase the fact that the team has not been 0-8 in more than 30 years. Harvest happenings are a continual discussion topic as folks theorize on just how hurtful this spring鈥檚 prolonged dry weather has been.
So you keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next time ...
