What is up with these relentless winds and then all this rain? Some lore says foggy February means windy spring, while others say wet spring - so why are we getting both?
Eligible USHS students have received invitations to the annual Living Sky awards night in Battleford, June 14 celebrating successes division wide. Guest speaker is Reuben Mayes, a former NFL football player. Mayes went to high school at NBCHS and played football for the Vikings.
The Grade 12 class is experiencing their last days of high school as they head into exam week next week with other students, as well as put the finishing touches on graduation plans. The ecumenical grad service was June 12 at St. Peter's Church with grads taking part in the service and Grade 11 parents and students looking after the fellowship lunch following the service. The grad ceremony takes place June 29 at UCHS gym at 10 a.m. with formal ceremony that evening at the community centre at 7 p.m.
Both elementary schools have been holding year end field trips for various classes, as well as wrapping up the last instruction leading into report cards. UPS will have their annual awards day June 26 as they honour academic, leadership and athletic achievements, in addition to saying goodbye to their Grade 6 classes. St. Peter's will hold year end celebrations June 27, starting with mass at 11 a.m. and awards ceremony and student talent show at 1 p.m.
Provincial and league teams are still playing ball every night of the week. And don't forget ball action is free in softball or baseball divisions. The Battlefords Ladies' League hosts two games a week on the Lions Diamond, Mondays and Wednesdays featuring the Unity Midgets, Unity Bantams or Unity Ladies teams with game time at 7 p.m. The Unity Midgets are currently only at one loss with next week being the last week of regular league play before playoffs begin July 2. Pee wees hold their games Tuesday nights on the Lions diamonds. The Elks diamond is shared by both squirt and mite girls' softball action. Mosquito baseball takes up every night on the Kinsmen diamond and pee wee baseball can be seen on the Credit Union diamond. Midget baseball shares the Cardinals diamonds with the Senior Cardinals.
The swimming pool is open and busy with session one of lessons. There is public swimming every evening from 7 to 8:30 and weekends from 2 - 5 p.m. In addition, the pool is offering aquasizes each weekday over the lunch hour. Watch for posters at the pool for upcoming activities.
Congratulations J.P. Boser, who at 88 years of age qualified for Provincial Saskatchewan Senior Fitness Associaiton golf championship. Might we all learn something from his activity and competitive spirit?
St. Peter's School hosted Ash Cooper, for their year end accelerated reading program celebrations. Ash reminded students of the importance of reading and practising all things to get better at them. He kept the crowd mesmerized with his quick sketches while answering questions on his career.
Congratulations Justin Wood, junior golfer who has seen much success in the past several years, and is aiming for bigger goals this year. After being awarded scholarships from Golf Saskatchewan to start his year out right, Justin competed in a tournament in Prince Albert earlier this month, where he finished an impressive sixth. Justin also won the Golf Town Comeback award in his division.
The Summer Fun preschool program registration will take place June 21. The program is limited to 20 preschool children ages three and four and will run over six weeks. Call the town office at 228-2621 for more details.
Canada Day celebrations are coming at up at the Unity and District museum with a multitude of events scheduled. The Community Resource Centre is selling tickets for a beef on a bun supper.
Another bid has been put in for the TSN Kraft Celebration tour that sees the TSN sports crew tour the Top 10 voted on communities to win a $25,000 prize donation to help their community. Watch for details as we will need help garnering votes for the cause.
Coffee row folks always have plenty of topics on the table. Some are finally celebrating the end of hockey season! The much anticipated Rider season is in regular discussion. They have lots of ball games in town to review and they are even starting to share their plans for the summer.
