At the District 5 Lions oratory competition held in Nipawin March 5, four girls spoke in front of a crowd of over 200 and judging them were members of Toastmasters International. Awarded first prize was Melissa Saunders, in Grade 12 at Borden, who received $200, a keeper plaque, certificate and a large plaque that will be on display at Borden School until November.
Melissa spoke on having to leave her farm home at Borden in the fall to attend university and all the challenges she will have to face living in a big city. She feels that her family, friends and teachers have well prepared her for this journey and she will be able to hopefully fly like an eagle come fall.
Second place was awarded to Darci Tkaczyk, in Grade 9 at Borden, who received $100, a keeper plaque and certificate. Darci spoke on how being a teenager isn't easy, but if you can overcome all the ups and downs it is well worth it as you don't want to miss out on one of the most important stages in your life.
Two students from Rosthern Junior College, Ryann Goota of Martensville who spoke on the reality show Jersey Shore and Kirstin Wiens from Alberta who spoke on the fantasy world of zombies, were runner-ups, collecting $75 each and certificates.
A baby shower was held in the Borden Senior's' Room March 12 for Sepeideh Assman, daughter of Geoff and Marlese Assman of Saskatoon. Mary Saunders introduced the head table - Marlese and Sepeideh, grandmother Sharon Assman and Erin Sears, sister of Marlese. After the gifts were all opened and passed around, Marlese thanked everyone for coming and for the wonderful gifts. Lunch was then enjoyed with coffee or punch.
Radisson Swimming Pool committee is presenting a play, 18 Cows and a Corpse, with April 1 as a dress rehearsal at 7:30 p.m. for $12, dinner theatre onApril 2 at 6 p.m. for $25 and dessert theatre April 3 at 3 p.m. for $15. Tickets are available at Radisson businesses and Marcy at the credit union in Borden.
Congratulations to Justin and Rachel Block of Borden on the birth of Kemper John, born March 7. He is a first grandchild for Don and Jeannette Block of Borden.
Connor Wainwright of Borden plays on the Tier ll Martensville Bantam team and they travelled to Stanley Mission March 12 to play their second game of provincials. The first game in Martensville March 6 was tied at 5 -5 and at Stanley Mission Martensville won 11 - 7 so they advance to the next round.
Radisson Royal Purple met March 7 at the Radisson town office in the afternoon to judge 126 posters from kindergartent to Grade 9 students from Borden and Maymont Schools with theme Positive Lifestyles or Healthy Living. There were 20 essays on the same topic handed in from Grade 7 and 8 Borden students.
A short meeting was held after the afternoon and evening judging was completed with secretary Lorraine Olinyk chairing the meeting. Plans were made to attend a district meeting at Asquith April 9. The cash raffle was won by the lodge. Special classes at the Radisson Fair will be sponsored by the lodge in memory of departed sisters Joy Froom and Merilyn Bischler. Once the certificates are printed, some of the ladies will go to the schools and present prize money, certificates and treats to the students at both schools. The winning posters and essays go to the provincial level to be judged.
The Shrove Tuesday pancake and sausage supper at Borden Community Centre hosted by the Anglican and United Churches was well attended and it was great to see the Interchurch Youth Group helping out cooking and serving pancakes, clearing off tables and even doing a few dishes. The United Church held a St. Patrick's Day Luncheon March 17 in the Borden Seniors' Room.
Borden School held a spelling bee March 10 for kindergrarten to Grade Six, and half of the money pledged went to Telemiracle with the other half for programs at the school. In Grade 1 Wyatt was the last speller standing while in Grade 2 it was Jade and Savannah. Grade 3 student Spencer won out and in Grade 4 Danika, Brooke and Colton all lasted nine rounds. For a break everyone followed Grade 8 in doing actions to Happy Birthday, then the Grade 5 class of Rachel, Natalie, Max, Clayton, Kirsten and Preston all spelt words correctly for four rounds and in Grade 6 McKinley out spelled her class. Every student picked a prize from the many prizes on display.

Team highs in 55+ were Russian Thistles, Heinz 57 and Misfits. In mixed first was Clark and Company - 2,117 pin fall, Tracksell and Company 1,866 (four players), and the Five B's had 1,812 pin fall.
Radisson TOPS held their elections March 3 and elected for 2011-12 were: leader - Lorraine Olinyk, co-leader - Louise Clark, secretary - Florence Neufeld, treasurer -Tina Hessell. Appointed weight recorder was Doris Hamp and assistant weight recorder is Doreen Parker. Awards night and installation of officers will be in April and one or two members are planning to attend PRD in Saskatoon April 8 and 9. The chapter meets every Thursday in the Radisson town office at 9 a.m.
