The senior girls' volleyball team won their home tournament against Dalmeny, Delisle and Maymont. The boys placed second out of six teams at the Hepburn tournament.
Six students also placed in the top ten at cross-country finals last week to advance to provincials. Duncan Sutherland was second, Eric Westad third, Andrew Derksen fifth, Dallas Burnett 10th, Brooklyn Gader second, Emma Pidwerbesky third. Carson Derksen was first in his age group, but is not old enough to go to provincials.
This week is spirit week at Borden School - Monday is PJ Day, Tuesday is What the Heck are You Wearing Day, Wednesday is Cowboy/Redneck/Camouflage Day, Thursday is Sport/Jersey Day and Friday is Borden Bruins Day, so it should be fun all week.
The Borden Friendship Club held their potluck supper Sept. 24 with 37 out to enjoy birthday cake and ice cream brought by Laura Loeppky and Bev Assman. September birthday celebrants blowing out the candles were Dale Scruby and Judy Latimer. Entertainment for the evening was provided by Orton and Nancy Ratzlaff of Saskatoon who sang and played numerous gospel, old time and familiar tunes. Nancy plays banjo and Orton the guitar. October potluck supper and birthdays will be celebrated Oct. 22, as Oct. 29 is a flu shot clinic from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the community centre and the club is holding a Harvest Tea and Bake Sale in the club room starting at 1:30 p.m.
Borden's annual Threshing Day was held Sept. 27 under a cloudy and cool day, with the weather attributing to a smaller attendance at the field and the supper. The McCheane/Wake cook car was fairly busy. There was a stationary engine display belonging to Dave Saunders and some vintage stationary engines belonging to Terry Batty of Rosetown and Will Batty of Spiritwood.
Frank Block also had his model Minneapolis threshing machine built to scale running. Norm Wicks had a display of his woodworking. For sale were key holders and spinners with miniature antique cars or tractors mounted on them.
The parade of power at noon was led by flag bearers Colton Thiessen and Jason Hanley followed by horseback riders Stephanie Derbawka and Katie Dust. Louise Saunders piloted her team of horses pulling a democrat carrying John Newbold (100 years old) and MLA Randy Weekes.
Laverne and Roberta Kiland of Hendon had their team of black and white oxen (steers) pulling a democrat. A miniature team of blacks was driven by Gilles Labelle of Grandora pulling a small hayrack.
Brad and Gay Funk's grey Percherons pulled a democrat. Ken Crush from Langham had his three-hitch team of grey quarter horse crosses hitched to a democrat. Travis Waldner of Langham had four black Percherons pulling the binder. Stew Walton had his Belgians pulling a people carrier.
Bob Urban of Richard had a miniature pony pulling two small wagons. Mel Henry's white Percherons were hitched to a people carrier and Gordon Gerbrandt of Saskatoon had his stagecoach hitched to a team of quarter horses.
Randy Wolf had a team of Belgian crosses pulling a wagon and Norm Greer had his team of Morgans pulling a democrat. Neil Bartch had a team of Clydesdales pulling a plow and Russ Thiessen had his spotted draft team pulling a people carrier.

Larry Schmansky drove his 1956 Pontiac.
WDM Case steam engine pulled the MM threshing machine to end the parade.
Melissa Saunders, who is a certified farrier, demonstrated making two horseshoes and then nailing them on to the front feet of her mom's horse. Melissa uses a propane forge which heats to 700-900 F to heat the iron rod so she can hammer and file it into a horseshoe. She has to keep heating, then pounding and rasping, trying it on the horse's foot while hot before it finally gets to the right fit then it gets nailed on.
Kevin and Michael Sutherland demonstrated wood sawing using the Co-op tractor then the wood was hauled to the steam engine and the threshing got underway.
People lined up at the Seniors' Centre at 4 p.m. to buy their supper tickets. Many went across the street to view the museum or listen to the music of Terry and Don of Three Pack North band.
The roast beef supper by coal oil lantern got started at 4:30 p.m., with the crew feeding 275 people. The museum had a 50/50 draw at the supper and winning $309 was Ed Neufeld of Borden.
Condolences are extended to Gail (Grant) Schoenroth of Radisson, daughter of Shirley Jacobsen who passed away Sept. 18 at the age of 92. Her service was held in Kyle Sept. 25. Shirley had been a resident of the Borden Care Home for a few years until just a month ago when she was moved to the Langham Seniors' Home where she passed away.
Condolences to the Chamness and Saunders families at Borden of Gerald Bergman who had passed away July 10, one week short of his 90th birthday, and whose burial and service were held at Borden on Sept. 28, with Pastor Tony Martens officiating. The Bergman family sang at the luncheon served by the Borden Fellowship Church in the Community Centre.
