Congratulations to all the junior and senior high track athletes from Neilburg Composite School (NCS). They all advanced from Lashburn to districts in Meadow Lake.

At Meadow Lake, Bailey Tyler placed first overall in the bantam girls' division. She brought home a gold medal and placed first in both long and high jump, as well as second in the 100m. Kale Moth brought home a silver medal in the bantam boys' division. He placed first in the 3000m and the 1500m, as well as second in the 800m. Coleman Tyler placed third in the junior boys' high jump and Quinton Ryan was third in the junior boys' discus. Alex Foster headed to provincials, June 1 in Saskatoon, to compete in the quad. The quad includes four events - the 100m, the 800m, long jump and shot put.

The elementary track meet Monday was a great success. The weather was fabulous, not too hot or too cold and, most importantly, no rain. There were three new records set: Taeya Wiens, Grade 1 - new record in the 200 metre race; Kaylyn Koch, Grade 2 - new record in the 200 metre race; and Konnor Hiscock, Grade 4 - new record in the 400 metre race.

There were two parent volunteers assisting with events - Stephen Schmidt and Stephanie Gibbons. Garth Hollingshead worked up the sand pits and Wayne Newport moved sand for the school. Various staff members and students lined the tracks and worked in the booth and at the events. It really made the day go smoothly with all that help!

The Grade 4 to 6 students will go to the Tri-Meet in Maidstone June 6 to compete against students from Maidstone and Lashburn in track and field events.

Many groups in Canada are collecting pennies and then donating them to a children's charity. NCS has decided to collect pennies to be donated to UNICEF. If you would like to donate to the cause, drop off your pennies at the school. No need to roll them!

The elementary students will be participating in a bike rodeo June 15. The bike rodeo is a safety refresher course for those "experienced" young people who have been riding bikes for a while and a learning course for the beginners. At the bike rodeo, all bikes are also checked for operating safety.

Each child rides his/her bike through a skills course which is drawn out on the pavement using chalk and driving cones. The skills course consists of testing/teaching each child on their ability to turn corners, obey stop signs, ride in a circle, obey a yield sign, stop quickly and use hand signals. Synergy Credit Union has kindly made a donation to the school to buy prizes for the bike rodeo!

Mrs. Kerr-Goodfellow noted the Student Representative Council (SRC) hosted a community bake sale and barbecue recently. This effort was to raise funds for new sports jerseys. The SRC received $750 in donations before the sale started and they made about $500 with the actual sale, for a total of $1,250. This will purchase two sets of jerseys for the NCS sports teams.

The Grade 1 and 2 students will be presenting Bullybuster Kids' Concert for Change June 12 at 1:30 p.m. The class will be performing a variety of songs and dances aimed to raise awareness about bullying and to encourage children to stand up for themselves and others. They have been working hard for the past month to bring a wide variety of songs that talk about standing up for others, feeling good about who you are and, of course, stopping bullying. All are welcome to attend!

Marissa Brockhoff, Chantal Ryan, Dustin Hafner and Kasey Schmidt travelled to Saskatoon May 26 to compete in the provincial cook-off, hosted by the Chicken Farmers of Saskatchewan. The team made mango spinach salad with crispy chicken as their first course and Tuscany chicken as their entree. They received 87 per cent on their food, food prep skills, team work and presentation. The winning team received a mark of 92 per cent.

According to Mrs. Kerr-Goodfellow, the group had fun and learned a lot about cooking in a professional kitchen and how to pack up every ingredient to cook with at a provincial level. It was like Iron Chef cooking. Mrs. Kerr-Goodfellow said she was "very proud of how the team did and performed."

A set of keys was recently found on Main Street and brought to the school. They are for a Ford vehicle and have an automatic garage opener attached to them. Call the school if you have lost some keys and think they might be yours.

The Neilburg Preschool Cooperative held an Invitation Day May 2, with children, eligible to enroll in the fall, attending for an hour. If you have children who were born prior to Dec. 31, 2009 and you missed this event but are interested in sending them to the preschool, please contact Sarah Hein.

The music group Country Praise presented a concert at Manitou Evangelical Free Church April 22.
