The first day of kindergarten was Sept. 5, and found 10 young students eagerly joining the others at H. Hardcastle School. These young people are Carter Cole, Brelyn Courtenay, Maddox LaClare, Jaycee Letwinetz, Brook Mack, Even Pelchat, Keagan Russett, Michael St. Amant, Kye Thom and Graydon Troesch. Welcome to the 'big'school.

A new program is being implemented at HHS. The Student of the Week program is designed to recognize some of our outstanding students. Teachers and staff are able to nominate students whom they feel are worthy of recognition. All the nominations are put into a draw with a winner being chosen from both elementary and high school at the end of every week. The Student of the Week will get their picture in the paper and on the big screens at school and be treated to breakfast and prizes the following week.

Congratulations to our first winners! Danika Holloway, Grade 6, and Jesse Cadrain, Grade 10, are two very deserving and outstanding students.

The weekend of Sept. 15 was the date of the senior Lady Royals' volleyball tournament. There were seven teams again this year: Maidstone Huskies, Loon Lake Devils, Lashburn Lobos, Hafford Viqueens, Lloydminster Barons, Paradise Hill Panthers and the Edam Royals. After round robin play the teams taking part in the semifinals were Loon Lake vs. Maidstone and Edam vs. Hafford. The finals found the Edam Lady Royals taking on the Loon Lake Devils with the Lady Royals coming out on top. Congratulations to all the girls on games well played.

Pat Stuart, representing Turtleford and District Co-op, presented Lady Minto Health Care Centre recreation co-ordinator, Lynette La Clare, with $5,000 Aug. 8, as part of their legacy donations celebrating 50 years of service for the co-op in 2012. The money will be used to purchase a Steady-Mate Walker.

The 2013 community birthday calendar order forms came out in the mail last week. If you didn't get one or don't live in the community and are interested in an Edam calendar, contact Renee Day at 397-2868 to place your order or to make changes to your family dates. The deadline for orders and changes is Sept. 27. The calendars are once again selling for $12 each. With your support, this fundraiser can raise over $2,000 for the community each year.
