Student drama productions earn awards

Winners in the Regional Drama Festival in Unity April 19 and 20 were chosen by Ian C. Nelson, adjudicator for front of the house, and Kelly Brophy, backstage adjudicator.

Winners in the Regional Drama Festival in Unity April 19 and 20 were chosen by Ian C. Nelson, adjudicator for front of the house, and Kelly Brophy, backstage adjudicator.

Unity Composite High School

16 in Ten Minutes or less was runner-up for the Best Technical Production Award.

Saskatchewan Drama Association (SDA) Certificates of Merit awarded to crews exhibiting technical expertise included Shevaun Feser for sound and Ethan Vliestra for lighting in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Emma Greenwald and Megan Babchuk for stage management in 16 in Ten Minutes or Less.

The Bob Hinitt Technical Performance Award is given to one student exhibiting excellence in some aspect of technical theatre, makeup, costume, lighting, sound, set, music, etc. Runner-up was Megan Babchuk for her large Facebook page as the backdrop in the play, 16 in Ten minutes or less.

Wynona Hansen as the left eye in 16 in Ten Minutes or less won an award for acting excellence. Acting awards of merit given to students exhibiting excellence in character development and portrayal were won by Hannah Gerlinsky as Piper and Toby Prescott as Vance and James, in 16 in Ten Minutes or less.

Spirit of Festival awards, given at the discretion of each director to those students without whom the drama club would not be the same, were awarded to Erin Bick and Braden Spencer.

McLurg High School, Wilkie

McLurg entered one play into the festival competition, Pirattitude. Three SDA Certificates of Merit were won by individual students.

D. Halmagi won the SDA Certificate of Merit awarded to a student exhibiting technical expertise. He was the stage manager for Pirattitude.

Cjardi Ulrich and Alison Cey earned their certificates for acting excellence for their portrayal of ninjas.

The Spirit of Festival winner was Nick Nielsen.

Hafford Central School

With their play The Fired Kobassa, Hafford Central School picked up two SDA Certificates of Merit. Megan Jones won an acting certificate for her portrayal of Amber and Dylan Roth won a Technical Certificate of Merit for his lighting design.

Katrina Kindrachuk won the Spirit of Festival award.

Other schools

Hanley picked up eight awards including Best Overall Production for their play, Just Another Teenage Wasteland. Davidson won four awards, including best technical production. Rosetown picked up five nods, including runner-up to both best technical crew and best stage manager. Kerrobert was given four awards including runner-up to best visual production for their play F.R.E.A.C.S.
