Storm causes tree damage, interrupts harvest

Beautiful weather last weekend paved the way to more harvest progress, as can be seen by multiple machines moving in fields, grain trucks on our highways and grain terminals busy with unloading units.

Beautiful weather last weekend paved the way to more harvest progress, as can be seen by multiple machines moving in fields, grain trucks on our highways and grain terminals busy with unloading units. But a wicked storm blew through Monday, with high winds, hail and rain that will cause an uproar in those trying to harvest. Our neighbours reported hail and in Unity there was tree damage as a result of the high winds. Hopefully we are done with this kind of crazy weather for this season.

All three schools in Unity report their numbers have grown yet again. This is a reflection on a healthy, vibrant community.

Parents and children of UPS were treated to a pancake breakfast on the morning of Sept. 7. School community council members happily mixed and cooked up pancakes and ham. UPS staff served up the hot meal, along with fruit, milk and coffee to all the families who attended. This is a great welcome gesture by both the SCC and UPS staff which I'm sure kept all participants smiling for the day.

UCHS holds their welcome week activities next starting with a pyjama day and brunch Sept. 18. Wednesday will be formal day and picture day. Thursday follows with school colour day, burger sale, pep rally and first football game at 2 p.m. Friday wraps up with jersey day, school participation in the Terry Fox run, the annual chili cook off and the Warriors boys' volleyball tournament. .

The Warriors football team kicked off their season playing host to Hafford Sept. 8, with a victory of 43-13, showing their adjustment to six-man football was minimal. The fifth and final "Z" bowl, flag football tournament for kids Grades 2 to 8 was held at UCHS football field, following the Warriors football season opener. It enjoyed a great turnout of boys and girls on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Sunday Unity Minor Football began its season with many kids coming out to registration and opening day. The annual Minor Football Day is slated for Sept. 29.

It was a breezy but beautiful warm and sunny day for the UFC fundraising golf tournament. Although entry numbers were down, volunteers were plentyful and full of enthusiasm as were the players' golf grins. Organizers will know a total raised over the next week or so once all tallies are in.

Runners and walkers will be taking part in the third annual Candace Heitt memorial run Sunday. Funds raised are earmarked for the walking paths at the health centre to benefit patients and long term care residents, as well as anyone else who wishes to take advantage of the walk in nature. A large portion of this path was completed recently. Candace's parent's also use some of the funds to finance an annual scholarship at the high school in Candace's name.

Minor hockey registration has resulted in couple of teams in each division from initiation right through to Midget AA. A good number of kids registered for the Skills of Gold camp Oct. 6 and 7 in Unity. There were also strong numbers registered for the second annual three on three hockey tournament, which is a great pre-conditioning event for young hockey players. The Sylvan Lake Hockey camp has also received a favourable response in registration numbers.

Congratulations to J.P. Boser ,who at 89 years of age captured the national silver medal in the Seniors' Fitness Association Canadian championships. J.P. is an avid golfer and has medalled at several provincial events.

Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Saskatchewan Literacy Council is holding a literacy conference at the Unity Community Resource Centre for the cost of only $15, that includes lunch. This interactive training is fun-filled for anyone who works with or has children

It is municipal election time and nominations are now being accepted for both Catholic and Public School division boards as well as surrounding RM's and local town council seats. Sept. 19 is the deadline for the council and/or mayor positions

Bookings are now being taken for the annual fall fair and trade show slated for Sept. 29 and 30. Fall fair books are available at Mitchell Agencies in town and for more information contact the town office at 228-2621.

The UFC committee is hosting a steak and lobster dinner night Oct. 13 and ticket sales will begin soon.

It might be a ways off yet, but you want to get your tickets early for the sure sell out annual event "Dance for the Health Of It" slated for Oct. 27. This group has raised a tremendous amount of money over the years to put back into our community, while having fun and keeping fit. For more information contact Cliff Whitfield at 228-3753.

Coffee row folks are excited at the entirely different Rider team that showed up for the second half of the Banjo Bowl. Fans around the table could not help review, discuss and relive the excitement that led to another big win by the Riders in the last seconds of the game. It gives Rider fans in our province something to cheer about again. There is much activity coming up in the community this month, so "rowers" will have plenty of topics to discuss ahead. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week
