Still perched solidly on the mesa

Several weeks into this column that was supposed to help drag me off the plateau I've been on for what seems like months, and I'm still stuck.

But I've had several people comment that reading about my trials is inspiring to them, so here's another installment.

As I told Lisa last week, "I've just been living my life."

When I began this journey I was doggedly focused, but over the months I've lost that determination. I haven't completely reverted to form, but I've lost the discipline of making myself earn my side trips off the straight and narrow. It really is time to shape up.

After forking over $10 to Lisa Thursday when I slipped back up two pounds on the infernal scale, I received a stern "talking to" for my money. I was admonished to get back to my journal and to be honest about what I recorded there.

So, I am doing that. It's a good exercise. Knowing there is a lunch out I want to enjoy, a summer weekend coming up that looks like it's going to be warm and sunny, the journal makes me aware of what's going in my mouth and what I've been doing to and for my body.

On the upside, I survived a two-hour beach boot camp on the Canada Day weekend. This included three trips (well two and a half) up and down the stairs at the Cochin Lighthouse. Bonus boot camps are often offered at the lighthouse venue, but after hearing the aftermath from fellow boot campers I avoided the experience until that Saturday morning. I'm no longer a virgin, I was told.

The beach workout was the second I've attended. They are hilarious and an amazing amount of work. It was fun to see the kids in the playground at the main beach stopping to watch us in wide-eyed wonder. I don't think they were impressed. I think they believed us to be barking mad.

I followed that up with a gym visit when boot camp was rained out Tuesday and again Wednesday when it was still windy and miserable outside. Lisa credited all this activity for an improvement in my BMI even though my weight had increased, citing the development of extra muscle. Yeah, right but she does try to put a positive spin on things.

Time is running out for me to achieve 154 by the time I am 54. Wish me luck in getting back on track and don't hesitate to send your suggestions to [email protected].
