STAR CITY — Star City resident Candyace Blaire thought a mistake was made when she found out a pie she donated to a fundraiser sold for $5,000.

The flapper pie was sold in Prince Albert at Make-A-Wish Saskatchewan’s An Evening with the Stars on Nov. 17, which included a dinner, a dance and silent auction.

Blaire is no stranger to baking.

“I used to cook at the golf course in Melfort and now I don’t but I had a lot of experience with pies,” Blaire said. “And then when my husband and I found out it’s for Make-A-Wish, such a good cause, you know?”

Blaire’s original plan was just to bid $300 and get back the pie she made, as a way to give a donation. It turned out her pie was quite a bit more valuable than that.

“Then they texted back it went for $5,000 and I said to my husband, ‘are you sure, let me see, they must have made a mistake with the zeros.’”

They texted back, confirming no mistake was made.

“The highest bidder got the first choice of pie and Gord Broda, from Broda Construction in Prince Albert, paid $5,000 for Candy’s flapper pie,” said Allyson Toye, regional manager with Make-A-Wish Saskatchewan. “It surpassed our expectations. We were hoping to make $1,000 at the dessert auction, so the evening was a huge success for us.”

That night 15 desserts were auctioned making $14,000 for Make-A-Wish, and the evening itself raised $28,000.

“We’re working on 79 wishes in the province of Saskatchewan and the average with costs $10,000 and we’re always looking at additional funds and we thought, ‘hey let’s do a dessert auction.’”

Blaire said she chose flapper due to the popularity of the flavour.

“It tends to be a popular pie, and I wouldn’t have to make the pie crust that night because it’s on a graham crust. It tends to be a favorite of people,” Blaire said. “Just my same old recipe, totally from scratch that I’ve made all the years that I’ve been cooking.”

“We didn’t expect it to go for that at all, but it’s absolutely wonderful that it did and I hope that they enjoyed it,” Blaire said. “They’re made to be enjoyed.”
