April 30, the Borden Care Home Auxiliary held a spring tea in the care homewith a few dropping in for lunch. Gerbera daisy door prizes went to Dot Buswell, Shirley Jacobsen and Gail Schoenroth.
The addition to the care home is coming along nicely, with the walls up, roof on and shingled, the walkway built and enclosed to the present facility and partitions for the five double rooms and common room in place over a full size cement basement.
Congratulations to new grandparents at Borden - Randy and Joyce Orchard - on the birth of Abbigail Blare to Greg and Julia Orchard of Borden, a sister for Alexandria; David and Karen Buckingham on the birth of Bentley La-La to Corey and Jade Buckingham of Williams Lake, B.C. April 24; and Peter and Mary Thiessen on the birth of Solan Ronald April 24 to Rick and Ruth Vandenheuval of Saskatoon, a brother for Cruz. Great-grandmother Jean Sawchyn welcomes Logan Scott born April 29 to Chelsea and Scott Schmidt of Lloydminister. He is a brother for Noah. Great-grandparents Frank and Sheila Block announce the birth of Maddison Roxie Joanne Feb. 15 to Devin and Ashley Block of Stoney Plain, Alta.
A 50th wedding anniversary celebration for Frank and Sheila Block was held May 1 at Borden Community Centre. Cake and beverages were enjoyed for first half hour, then son Elloyd Block welcomed everyone, introduced the family - Elloyd and his wife Roxie , three children and new granddaughter. Maddison, Keith and Decireth and four children; Aileen and Randy with Aileen's two children; and Tracy and her two children. Cindy and Neil and family were absent.
Mark from Saskatoon played three medleies on the piano then a number of relatives and friends, many from Frank's oldtimer hockey and ball teams in Saskatoon, either toasted the couple or roasted Frank, as he is the trickster of Borden and elsewhere and always up to mischief.
On behalf of the community, Lorraine Olinyk congratulated them and presented Frank and Sheila with a monetary gift.
Each of the children and Frank's brothers, sisters and in-laws told humorous stories about growing up with Frank or with them as parents.
Sheila's bridal dress was modelled by one of the granddaughters and several guests congratulated or gave condolences to Sheila for putting up with Frank for 50 years. Sheila played a medley of tunes on the piano for everyone to enjoy, then Sheila and Frank thanked each other, their children, all the relatives and friends for coming out to make this a special day for them
Congratulations to all the Borden Dance Club members who competed in the Aberdeen dance competitions in Saskatoon April 29, 30 and May 1. Many of the solos, duets and groups received gold marks and one group received $100 in prize money. The dancers will be performing at their spring recital in the Borden Community Centre Saturday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 8 at 2 p.m.
Big equipment came into Borden, as Calgary Tunnelling prepared to auger in a long culvert under the west service road, under four lanes of highway and the railroad to alleviate any flooding in future years as there was south of the railroad this year.
The Borden Friendship Club held their potluck supper and April birthdays April 27 with over 30 out for the comedy night. After supper and birthday cake baked by Audrey Baker, the five celebrants present blew out the candles while Happy Birthday was sung to Velora Neufeld, Anna Elliot, Ed Neufeld, Mary Thiessen and Ann Brand. Ed Neufeld was MC for the program. Ann Brand told a funny story and some jokes, Velora Neufeld related a humorous account of being engaged to three men at the same time and Clive and Gladys Wensley sang two songs.
The Easter bunny, aka Laura Loeppky, hopped in to bring Easter goodies to everyone, then Farmer McDonald and his wife ambled in and sang Old McDonald Had a Farm with words describing local places and people, accompanied by Ed Neufeld playing harmonica. The farmer (Jean Hryniuk), after shaking the straw out of his hair from a tryst in the haystack, sang a few more songs along with his wife (Eileen Petrun) and Ed playing.
