Spring seems to have made up for its late start

Am I the only one who is concerned that we are now less than a month from the longest day of the year? There are still snow banks on the north side of tree lines! The amazing thing is how incredible nature is.

The amazing thing is how incredible nature is. Even though spring was very late, everything seems to be caught up with a normal year. Trees have greened up nicely and I noticed that, where snow had been at our cabin only weeks ago, wood violets have grown and are blooming and within a short time will produce seed and their cycle will be done. Early this week Shelly and I spotted an American Bittern in some marshy area near the village. Bitterns are actually on the endangered list!

Seeding is in full swing and most farmers are well past being halfway done. Now some heat to bring the crop along would be appreciated. Up to this point the seeding season has been safe without any accidents or injuries.

Get well wishes go out to Mal Buckingham and to Bernie Schliemann who are both trying to get better in a Saskatoon hospital. We are also pulling for Kaleb Hildebrand, infant son of John and Arleen Hildebrand, who underwent a heart transplant a week ago.

Congratulations go to Steven Prescesky who was the winner of the Rose Gill Lodge Mother's Day 50-50 draw. Steven went home with $305. Now it is time to get your tickets for the Father's Day draw.

Congratulations to Gwen Laughlin (Sr.) who became a life member in the Superannuated Teachers of Saskatchewan. Gwen taught in the Rabbit Lake School and area for many years and most of us can say that Mrs. Laughlin was our Grade 1 and 2 teacher. This provincial award, presented at the annual general meeting banquet at the Travelodge in Saskatoon, is awarded to superannuated teachers who have made significant contributions and involvement at the provincial, chapter and local level.

Welcome to Fay Carpenter who has recently moved into one of the units. It is great to be able to say once again that all of the houses in the village are being lived in.

There seems to be a lot of things to do in a little village. Last weekend the community got a facelift as people got out and tidied up their property. There seemed to be a concerted effort around Rose Gill Lodge with some tree removal.

Once again Meeting Lake Regional Park will be the site for the Zone One Square Dance Jamboree. Dancing begins the evening of May 31 at the Round Hall and continues until Sunday afternoon. Come out and watch or give it a try!

Mal and Delores Buckingham will be having a farm auction sale, June 10. No, they are not moving off the farm - just getting rid of the machinery so they don't have to feel guilty about not using it anymore. Apparently it will not be hard to persuade Delores to part with anything once used by a cow.

The second annual Rabbit Lake Rhubarb Festival at the Rabbit Lake Hall runs from noon until 5 p.m., June 14. If you like rhubarb, this will be the place to be. There will be a judged rhubarb pie contest with the winner being crowned Rhubarb Ruby for 2013.

The Rabbit Lake and District Museum committee will be hosting a museum picnic and western gospel music afternoon, June 16. The picnic begins at 12:30 p.m. at the museum and the music begins at 2 p.m. Bring a lawn chair and have an enjoyable afternoon.

The Rabbit Lake seniors will hold their monthly potluck supper June 19.

Let's get fired up for the 25th annual Carlton Trail Jamboree! This year the headliners are Brad Johner and the Johner Boys, Donny Parenteau, Dean Brody and Carroll Baker. Advance tickets are available now.

Husband sits with the remote in hand, flipping through the TV channels. Wife asks him, "What is on TV?" He replies, "Dust!" And that is how the fight started.
