Spring? No crows or gophers yet

Finally I think it is safe to say spring has found us! For the last week we have had melting snow but no word of crows or gophers yet. I will be waiting for Henry Konopelski to make the report of the first sightings.

Finally I think it is safe to say spring has found us! For the last week we have had melting snow but no word of crows or gophers yet. I will be waiting for Henry Konopelski to make the report of the first sightings. But then alas, it is three snows after the crows. Calving is in full swing so we hope for good weather.

One weekend was not so spring-like. March 1 proved that old saying about March coming in like a lion, and you know the rest. Rabbit Lake and District Agricultural Association took a brave stand and saw the annual snowmobile rally through.

Only 32 riders were up to the challenge. And what was the challenge? I don't have to remind anyone here of the -40 degree morning and the wind chill on top of that. We won't have to remind Arnie Loehndorf or Carter Steele either as they both sported frost-bitten faces.

Even though it was cold, the supper was a great success. Seventy-five door prizes, donated by individuals and businesses, were passed out. Thanks to everyone who donated great prizes. As usual there was a 50-50 draw and this year Dorreen Lamb went home over $900 richer. Congratulations, Doreen.

The big winners were all local this year with Troy Moore winning $5,000, Jen Pedersen winning $2,500 and Vivien Bassingthwaite winning $1,250. The rider prizes of $500 went to Tyrese Manitokin and Brent Britton. The five seller prizes of $100 each went to Bob Lamb, Angel Haryung, Delores Buckingham, Dave Rohd and Cam MacDonald. No doubt it will be warmer next year.

One has to marvel at the generosity of the people of Saskatchewan. Again this March people dug deep into their pockets to help push the annual Kinsmen Telemiracle total over $5 million.

It was especially exciting this year for people from Rabbit Lake. Elmer and Doris Kohlman (Buckingham) farmed on the south side of Meeting Lake for many, many years. Elmer and Doris were from original families who had settled this area. They had one daughter, Linda, who was unfortunately challenged.

After they retired from farming they moved to North Battleford. Elmer passed away and Linda continued living with her mom until Doris passed away at an age over 90. Subsequently Linda has also passed away.

Doris supported Telemiracle annually. This year she supported Telemiracle in a big way. The estate of Elmer, Doris and Linda Kohlman presented the Kinsmen with a total just over $425,000. We are all very proud of this family.

Congratulations go to Cheralyne Martens and Aaron Gibson on their recent engagement. Cheralyne is the daughter of Dave and Marlene Martens of Rabbit Lake and Aaron is from Meadow Lake. They will be married Aug. 9.

Claus and Cyndy Spielmann have returned from a holiday in Mexico where they also attended the marriage of Cyndy's nephew. Isabelle McLennan is back from visiting her son, Kelly, in Kelowna for a bit this winter. Jake and Cecilia Krahn are back from a holiday in the States and Joan and Hanna Dzialo are back from Hawaii.

It is good to see everyone back safe and sound. Within the next few weeks all the snowbirds should be back as well.

The Sandwith Kaiser tournament was March 7. Twenty-four players showed up and everyone had a good time.

An upcoming event in Rabbit Lake is the St. Paul's Church annual deep-fried turkey supper followed by a Kaiser tournament. This year it is on March 29 at the Rabbit Lake Community Hall.
