The Borden Friendship Club held their monthly potluck supper July 25 at the home of Ed and Dianne Rawlyk on their acreage. More than 60 were on hand to enjoy a variety of salads along with burgers or hotdogs supplied by the club. For dessert there were cupcakes and ice cream cones. Present to celebrate July birthdays were Helen Sutherland, Jean Sawchyn, Ron and Sue Mills, Mel Kuntz, Gary Palmer, Ron Bezugly, Laura Loeppky and Barb Leschysyn. After the meal, Archie Wainwright sang a number of old familiar tunes accompanied byÌý Ed Neufeld playing guitar and singing.
Saturday the Borden Museum held their first Adventures at the Museum, with Annie Kostiuk from Saskatoon demonstrating the spinning wheel and hand carding raw wool. She showed how to take the raw carded wool and join it with two strands of wool yarn then wind it up in a spool on the spinning wheel. When she was young she used to card by hand then a hand powered carding machine was invented and she used that. From the wool she made quilts, heavy socks and mitts plus other articles of clothing.
After the demonstration, the museum board served cookies and iced tea. Aug. 4, the museum adventure will present the Sargent family history, then the following Saturday, Helen Gerster will talk about nursing in a rural hospital, followed by Renee Walker talking about nature. Everyone is welcome to attend these Saturday adventures at 2 p.m. and learn more about the history of Borden and area.
Radisson held their annual show and shine on Sunday on Main Street from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Providing the entertainment all afternoon where Highway 71 – Glenn and Joan Julseth and friends. The Radisson Communiplex hosted the food booth and the pie and ice cream booth. Radisson Library also had a book sale going on at the same time.Ìý
There were 19 snowmobiles on hand and receiving the trophy for travelling the furthest were Kevin Wiesener of Leduc, Alta. and George Sawka from Edmonton, Alta.
There were 150 entries in the car, truck, tractor and motorcycle show with the winners being: 1920 to ‘29 – 1926 Cadillac limousine owned by Dale Mackie of Victoria, B.C., who also received the plaque for coming the greatest distance; 1930 to ‘39 – 1937 Ford two to ‘door shown by Ron Lee of Saskatoon; 1940 to ‘49 – 1940 Ford coupe owned by Val Muyers of Saskatoon; 1950 to ‘59 – 1950 Pontiac Silver Streak shown by Bud Small, Saskatoon; 1960Ìý to ‘69 – 1966 Impala SS brought by Harvey Custer of Saskatoon; 1970 to ‘79 – 1971 Challenger RT owned by Cam Krakowka of Saskatoon; 1980 to ‘89 – 1981 ZZ* Camaro belonging to Pete Fehr of Asquith; 1990 to ‘ 99 – 1995 Pontiac Firehawk owned by Trevor Button of Warman; 2000 and newer – Mercedes SLK shown by Brian Whitehead of Cochin.
Best customized vehicle was a 1932 Ford roadster shown by Neil Janzen of Warman, best convertible was a 1964 Impala owned by Randy Fischer of Saskatoon, best truck was a 1968 Chev C10 shown by Neil Kramer of North Battleford, best tractor was a 1946 McCormick H owned by Daryl Amey of Radisson, best import was a 1976 TRS owned by Rick Middleton of Osler and the best bike was a 2015 Harley owned by Duncan Stead of Radisson.
Special interest plaque went to a horseless carriage shown by John Schossler of Saskatoon. A draw was made from all the entrants for $100 and this was won by Kevin Wiesener, who donated it back to the town for a charity. The larger raffle prizes were won by Craig Munday of Saskatoon, Stewart Nutting of Radisson, Garry Whitt of Radisson and Harry Lerch of Radisson. There were many smaller donated prizes and these were won by close to 20 local residents and a number of winners from other towns and cities.
Aug. 5 there will be a bridal shower for Kelsey Derksen in the Borden seniors’ room at 2 p.m. Kelsey is the daughter of Dennis and Tonia Derksen of Borden.
