Sperle family attends movie premiere

With the winter starting over five months ago and heaving unending winter weather havoc on us, no one is convinced spring may be appearing just yet.

Pat, Melissa and son Nash Sperle took parts as extras in the Corbin Bernsen film shot in Provost, Alta. The Sperles attended the premiere of the movie, March 9. Although Melissa stated they were not noticeably seen in the film, she recognized the back of her son Nash in one shot. The movie is due to be released in May in DVD format. It was originally entitled Barlowe Mann but has since been renamed Beyond the Heavens.

UCHS senior boys' and girls' basketball teams were looking for a win at regionals to advance to provincial play. The senior boys' team fought hard but were unable to capture that elusive ticket, although they did push out a big win in their final game. The senior girls, who were ranked seventh in the province, came up against a tough Indian Head team in the final and were unable to capture the win.

The UCHS drama club is in the last few weeks of preparation for their spring performances in addition to presenting at the regional drama festival, which Unity is hosting. The public performance is due around April 12. The drama festival is coming up April 26 and 27.

Some students from UCHS who attended WE Day are already choosing to pay it forward by holding a bake sale Saturday in the Delta Co-op lobby. Proceeds from the bake sale, in addition to clothing and non-perishable food items, will be given to the Unity Community Resource Centre and Food Bank.

Unity Public School sent Ramani Tyagi, a Grade 6 student, along with Molly Mabbett and Riley DeBelser, current UCHS and former UPS students, with Miss Riddell to the Saskatchewan Math Challenge at the University of Regina. Ramani earned eighth place in the individual category.

Twenty-six wins and one tie - this is what the Midget A team has earned so far this season in regular season, league playoffs and provincial playoffs. The team has advanced to the provincial final against Swift Current. The series began March 18.

The Peewee Lazers have also been a successful and very busy division. The team that played in the Highway 14 hockey league captured their league championship title March 16 in Dinsmore. Earning 19 wins, one loss and one tie in the regular season, this team marched into league playoffs and earned six wins to win the league title.

The other peewee team played in the STEP league. Playing St. Walburg in their league finals, the team came back from a 4-1 deficit to win the first game 5-4. Game two did not go quite so well, forcing the series to game three in Unity March 17. However, this team showed the crowd it isn't over until it's over and scored a thriller of a winning goal in the last 18 seconds of the game to capture the league title.

The peewee provincial team is now facing off against KDL (Kerrobert, Dodsland, Luseland) in the northern final, winning game one March 11. Game two was to be played at home March 18.

The Red Novice Lazers faced off against Luseland in the league final, winning game one in Luseland. Game two was played at home March 18 and it was a close right up to the finishing buzzer. Unity did not come out with the win.

The atom division hosted their home tournament Saturday. It was a great day for the kids to wrap up their season with the two Unity teams facing off in the final game and Unity White earning the win.

The playoff road for Unity kids playing out of town in hockey playoffs includes Brittany Hauta and Samantha David playing for the Neilburg Monarch Midget A Girls. After winning against Meadow Lake and then losing to Elrose, they are out of provincials.

The West Central Midget AA girls' team, which includes Unity's Heather Wood, played in the league final. They will also face off against Regina for the provincial final. In game one Wood earned a shutout victory for her team. The second game was to be played March 17 in Regina.

Last weekend, the Unity Curling Club played host to the annual Bramiche Farms Ladies' Bonspiel . Twelve teams took part. And, to wrap up their season will be the year-end Funspiel this weekend.

It looks like minor ball numbers are up again. Last year multiple teams were hosted in several divisions and it appears this will be the case again this year. New executive members will need to step in as Bob Abel, long-time minor ball president, steps away from the helm after over 10 years of service.

The Unity United Church ladies braved the snowy weather March 14 and held their annual St. Patrick's tea and bake sale. There were plenty of goodies to purchase at the baking table, delectable desserts to enjoy over coffee and conversation.

The Unity Ministerial Association is still hoping to host the annual Way of the Cross Walk on Good Friday but asks participants to watch and listen for updates because this year will be the first time we have been challenged by weather.

Unity School of Dance is hosting their showcase of Solos and Duets Sunday, March 24, with one show at 2 p.m. and another at 7 p.m. at the UCHS gym. Silver collection will take place as well as penny collections for Free the Children.

Remember the museum is still hosting Sunday pancake brunches. A bargain price of only $6.

Unity Credit Union will hold their annual general meeting March 26.

Delta Co-op wrapped up their annual meetings at all locations March 14. It was another record year for Delta Co-op, with the board of directors allocating $1,600,731 to Delta Co-op members, including $694,547 being given back in the form of cash repayments in December.

The annual Delta Co-op Easter egg hunt for little ones is March 30. Children 0-10 years of age are let loose on a field full of eggs. Each egg is stuffed with either a chocolate egg or a prize ticket. Prize tickets are redeemed in age categories for a vast number of prizes donated by local businesses. The Easter bunny and Cooper the Co-op mascot will be there and Sifto will provide a hot dog barbecue for all participants.

The Unity Wildlife Federation will be holding firearm safety classes in April. Interested individuals should call the Unity schools for an application or M. Bosch at the RM office at 306-228-2248.

Coffee row folks are avidly reviewing the Team Canada results from the World Curling Championships. This is a fun group full of laughter and optimism. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week
