HUMBOLDT — Young pianists from across the province filled Westminster United Church with sound during the Jean McCulloch Memorial Junior Piano Competition.

The recital for players Grades 3 through 8 was put on by the Saskatchewan Registered Music Teachers’ Association (SRMTA) and was “made possible through the generous donation of Regina piano teacher Jean McCulloch,” said Christy Waldner, president of SRMTA’s east central branch.

The May 25 competition was “a lot of work” for the 12 youth musicians, she said, “because it’s an entire concert program.”

“You can often practice one piece really well, but this is like five and six, or sometimes up to seven pieces,” Waldner said. “To get all of that presentable at one time takes a lot of work and a lot of dedication.”

Competition has alternated between different Saskatchewan towns annually. The competition was last held in Humboldt in 2007.
