HUMBOLDT — An effort to collect socks for those in need is expanding this year to include more local families.

After determining about five years ago that one of the big items that the homeless needed was socks, the Chiropractors’ Association of Saskatchewan has hosted a province-wide Toasty Toes campaign together with the Salvation Army.

Dave Martinuk, one of the organizers of the local campaign, said this year’s local toasty toes campaign will add a local twist.

“We're still going to be donating the bulk of the socks toward the provincial campaign, which is to the Salvation Army. But what we've done is we've added a couple of different angles to it this year.”

The campaign will also collect socks for the Humboldt Kinettes Christmas Cheer campaign.

Last year, the Toasty Toes campaign collected more than 18,000 pairs were collected province-wide, surpassing the goal of 15,000.

“They told some amazing stories of people who really appreciate it having warm feet,” Martinuk said. “Some people would come in in the wintertime and just be without any socks whatsoever. When it's cold out, that's not necessarily a comfortable feeling.”

Those wishing to donate socks can drop them off at collection points located at Humboldt’s two chiropractic offices, Yuen’s Family Clothing, Conexus Credit Union, Knight Archer Insurance, Peavey Mart, Warehouse One, Universal Sports, Haus of Stitches, Free Spirit Market, Causeway Natural Health, Anytime Natural Fitness, Caleb Village and Curves.

The province-wide Toasty Toes campaign will run until Nov. 22, but efforts to collect socks for the Kinettes will continue until Dec. 12.
