Pearl Hawkins was guest of honour at a celebration of her 75th birthday April 26 at the Do Drop In.

Another dozen or so snowbirds have returned to their summer homes in the area and are boosting attendance at community events, which is most welcome. Ray and Marnie Davie, Lucille and Bernie Gregoire, Joe and Judy Fransoo, Cyril and Madeline Fransoo, Conrad and Noreen Bernier, George and Diane Lessard, Gary and Elaine Poole, Vernon Iverson and Ron Iverson and others that I don't know about have returned.

The first time Vernon went into a grocery store after his arrival in Yuma,Ariz., he ran into Dennis Tebay. The tourist business down there has expanded so much that there are thousands of Canadians spending the winters where it is warmer, as well as Americans from the northern parts of the States. Canadians from eastern Canada are more often found in Florida but some go to Arizona or Texas.

Winners at duplicate bridge at the Do Drop In Tuesday evening were Ray and Marnie Davie and second were Margaret Dyck and Ross Morton.

The monthly meeting of the Do Drop In was held on April 16. The report of the annual meeting held last month indicated that the executive remains the same. The date for the next shuffleboard tournament is April 26 at 10 a.m. The regional meeting of the SSAI will be held in Pierceland May 21 and two voting delegates will attend.

The Meota Hall committee held their April community luncheon April 17 with a good turnout of folks who surely enjoyed the delicious roast beef and scalloped potatoes, veggies and salad buffet, set out under the supervision of Pearl Hawkins and with her volunteer assistants. Desserts of ice cream and cake were a compliment to the meal. Two Easter baskets were raffled off and the lucky winners were Lorna Pearson and Fred St. Marie. Lots of visiting took place with some folks who hadn't seen one another for a while.

After receiving about four inches of snow in the morning, the Sons of Norway held their Norwegian Whist afternoon at the Do Drop In April 18 with three tables in play. A welcome visitor was Arlene Walker's granddaughter, Melanie Reid from Dillon. Top scores were by Lorna Pearson, second Bev McCrimmon, third was a tie between Shirley Tebay and Arlene Walker and fourth was Murray McCrimmon. This was followed by a potluck supper with a tasty variety of dishes and much socializing. Ken Tucker played cards and his wife, Anna, and Beulah Corbeil joined us for supper.

March 26, Gwen Lacerte and Arlene Walker, of Meota, flew to Palm Springs, Calif. for a two-week holiday. They rented a car and drove to Yuma, Ariz. to visit Vernon Iverson. He showed them interesting places in the area for the next few days. Then they followed Vernon and their cousin Ron Iverson along the California coast to Solvang (a Danish town) and toured the Hearst Castle. Then the men headed north through the redwoods in British Columbia to Salt Spring Island, and on home while the girls drove to Death Valley, the Hoover Dam and Lake Havasu. They returned to Palm Springs to fly home just as the weather was getting too hot, only to find winter still in full force back here.

Gwen Lacerte enjoyed the company of her granddaughter Megan Lacerte from Calgary over Easter. Megan visited friends in Saskatoon on her way up and then her other grandmother, Yvette Lessard, and relatives in North Battleford.

Remember to mark your calendar for weekend activities at the Do Drop In. Friday afternoon there's Norwegian Whist, then Canasta in the evening. Saturday there's a shuffleboard tournament starting at 10 a.m. To get your name on the list phone Robert Iverson at 306-892-4626.

Easter Sunday found the entire family of Colleen and Scott Shepherd at the family farm home. Great visiting and a super supper met everyone's satisfaction. The children played so well and all enjoyed meeting Rhonda and Brent Kauth's new baby daughter, born April 14, a sister for Kruz.

The family of Dorothy, now of North Battleford, and the late Kenn Ray, formerly of Prince, gathered at the home of Sheila and Don Orchison in Edam Sunday for their Easter meal and great fellowship. Sheila surprised her mother when they played a video tape taken at the 40th anniversary of Kenn and Dorothy at their farm, in 1990, which brought back many memories.

Eric Callbeck has been spending more time up on the roof replacing shingles at the Ard home following the many wind storms we have experienced this spring.

Winners at Contract bridge at the Do Drop In on Monday evening were Robert Iverson first and Mary Greenwald second.

The evening of April 26 found a nice crowd at the Do Drop In to help Pearl Hawkins celebrate her 75th birthday. The hall was decorated with white tablecloths, fresh flowers, posters and family pictures. Everyone congratulated Pearl as they arrived. The Meota chorus entertained with some of the old songs with Lou Tait on the piano. Then she played to accompany John Kalesnikoff on his accordion and Lloyd Beaumont on the saxophone as they played a few tunes.

The birthday cake and ice cream was passed around while everyone continued to visit and enjoy one another.

Surprise guests of the evening were some childhood friends -Albert and Sylvia Gatzke from Belbutte along with Gordon and Evelyn Turnbull from Spiritwood.

Word has come of the passing of my brother-in-law, Richard Pearson, April 21 in Kelowna, B.C. where he and his wife have been in hospital for some time. It is a coincidence that he would pass one day later than his brother John who passed on April 20, 2010. Richard grew up in the Idylwild and Spiritwood areas, so was well known there, back in the 1950s.
