Snow held off, but arrived with a vengeance

Yes it has been a long while since there has been a report from Rabbit Lake and over the last while I have had many people, mostly people from a distance away, asking when it would reappear.

Henry and Mary Konopelski were guest of honour at a 40th wedding anniversary celebration at Rabbit Lake Hall Sunday.

Yes it has been a long while since there has been a report from Rabbit Lake and over the last while I have had many people, mostly people from a distance away, asking when it would reappear. Thanks to those who have encouraged me to keep writing and to those who read the Rabbit Lake news. It is really a humbling experience.

I am not going to recap the summer. It is unfortunately gone and so are its many events. Fall began with the usual agricultural rush. The crops needed extra time to mature after a very wet summer and this fall certainly co-operated. Snow did not come to this area until Nov. 2, but when it came, it came with a vengeance. It is really too bad that some of the snowbirds leave before that first snowstorm and they are really missing something! Most of the guys agree that between six and eight inches have fallen and most of it has stayed. The surprising thing is that the overnight temperature did not drop consistently below freezing until this week. I think, judging by the morning conversation the crops where average to above average and I think everyone got them into the bin. As important, the harvest was completed without accidents and no one was hurt.

Now the community is gearing up for more leisure type of activities. On Monday nights a group of ladies are quilting at the Rabbit Lake Senior Sunrise Circle. This is a library program and seems to be well subscribed to. In addition the library is doing the treat of the month draw. Over the summer Cree Siegel, Jean Walker, Janette Klaassen and Carol Rohl have all gone home with a big home made treat. Tickets are available all over town. I really must mention that Glen Freethy is the new librarian.

The Rabbit Lake Community Hall hosted the annual Thanksgiving supper Saturday evening of the Thanksgiving weekend. A profit of over $2,100 was realized. Thanks to the many volunteers who organized the supper, donated food and worked with the set up, clean up and in the kitchen. Soon the south side of the hall roof will need reshingling and the money will help with maintenance issues.

The Rabbit Lake Seniors are hosting the annual turkey shoot Nov. 28 from 7-10 p.m. at the hall. There will be bingo. To start the whole evening there will be a chili supper. Later in the fall they are hoping to have Canasta lessons for those who might like to learn or brush up on the rules of a different game.

The Rabbit Lake Community Hall Board will be hosting a Christmas social at the hall on Dec 10. Plan to come and have fun playing games and enjoying some home baked Christmas goodies.

At the last Rabbit Lake and District Agricultural Association meeting the green light was given to having the annual snowmobile rally on March 7, 2015. It can't possibly be as cold this year as it was last year. Remember -54 C that morning?

Condolences go out to Ron Hansen, Joan and Hanna on the passing of Ron's mother, Jean Hansen. Funeral services were held on Nov. 8 in Spiritwood. Jean had been a resident in Rose Gill Lodge. Also our thoughts go out to the McNabb families on the passing of Clifford McNabb or the Sandwith area. Clifford's funeral was also held Nov. 8.

Nov. 9 was Henry and Mary Konopelski's 40th wedding anniversary. There son David and his wife and family hosted a come and go afternoon Sunday at the Rabbit Lake Hall. The hall was filled to capacity. I think that has something to do with Henry and Mary's positive outlook on life and the time they have to spend with everyone, perhaps over a cup of coffee or maybe a short visit in the mall. Congratulations and thanks for the party.

The concrete is poured and forms are off at the museum site, but the old hospital is still in its original spot and Acton teacherage is still in Ron Tomanek's yard. When the big spruce trees came down on the north side of the hospital we all thought the move was inevitable but now so. Perhaps in the spring.

Now that the nights are getting colder the crew will be starting preparing and flooding the skating rink for another season. Can't you just taste those Tuesday night burgers and fries?

Hunters are a frequent sight now as the season is open for game. We are still seeing moose and mule deer but the white-tails have become much more elusive.

So this is an update on things that have happened or are happening in Rabbit Lake. Don't be shy about passing your news items my way and I will be happy to pass them along.
