HUMBOLDT — A smaller event will aim to fill the hole left by the postponement of the Conexus Credit Union Humboldt Broncos Memorial Golf Tournament.
There will be a four-person per team Texas Scramble event at the Humboldt Golf Club hosted by the tournament organizers on Saturday, Aug. 8.
“It's a scaled down version of what we've done over the last couple of years,” said Brian Munz, one of the hosts of the tournament. “Obviously with COVID-19 and all the provincial protocols, it just wouldn't be right to be able to hold the event like we've done over the first two years.”
Tee times will be staggered throughout the day. Like previous years, each hole will feature a memorial picture of someone lost in the April 2018 bus crash. Prizes will be mailed after the event.
“The important thing for everybody to remember is it's a day of golf to obviously honor those that were on the bus, but also for people to get out, get some fresh air, socially distance properly and just play a round of golf with your four buddies,” Munz said. “Whoever has the lowest score will be engraved on our memorial golf tournament trophies.”
The Humboldt Broncos Memorial Golf Tournament, along with the 2020 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League Hall of Fame Induction Banquet and a Hunter Brothers concert, was originally set to go on Aug. 7 and Aug. 8, but has been postponed to Aug. 6 and 7, 2021, depending on what the situation with the pandemic is at that time.
This year’s event came from discussions with the golf course, Munz said
“Our organizing committee along with Corey [Schweitzer, the general manager] at the golf course got together and said, ‘Hey, can we do something small?’”
The money raised from the event will go to the Humboldt Broncos Legacy Awards Program, which has contributed to causes like the Humboldt Emergency Relief Organization, Humboldt Collegiate Institute Memorial Committee, Friends of Logan Boulet Golf Tournament, two awards through the Horizon School Division, and the Youth Involvement Award at this year’s Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce’s Mark of Excellence Awards.
Munz said the breadth of contribution given by the program shows the 2017-18 Humboldt Broncos were involved in more than just hockey.
Those who want to golf in the event can contact the Humboldt Golf Club at 306-682-2833.
“If you want to be involved,” Munz said, “make sure you call the pro shop sooner than later because I know the tee times have been very popular so far.”
